Starting a business at the same time as TTC - am I insane?

I am in the process of starting a wedding cake business and have realised that if I want another baby (have 6 and 3 year olds already), I need to have it sooner rather than later. Reason being that once the business is launched and (hopefully) busy with orders, I will have even less opportunity to TTC.

Business should be launched in August 2011. So am thinking I could start TTC this month so that I can give myself 3 months maternity leave starting in Feb/March before tackling the peak summer wedding season in July/August 2012.

Just wondered if anyone else had experience of doing something completely life changing at the same time as TTC/being pregnant/having a newborn.

I have just started a business and a week later found out I am pregnant...! but I don't think it's possible to time everything perfectly.

TCM - just go for both, there's no telling how quickly either will happen and what will be, will be... good luck!

Yeah :) Sod's law is right.

I wasn't really expecting it to last though as have had lots of MCs...but have now reached 14 wks and my fear at what on earth will happen to my business is greatly outweighed by my delight at being PG/my fear that something will go wrong with the PG...(depending on what day it is).

It's a good problem to have, really.

chippingin - you do have a point. Thanks for the encouragement. After all, the business could take longer to launch, I could take a while to get pregnant etc. So no knowing what will coincide with what.

starkadder - congratulations! About the business and the pregnancy :) I guess it gives you more to worry about but also more to be excited about too!

I kind of feel a little better about it all. TTC and startign a business are both exciting new ventures so I should see it that way rather than 'what am I thinking?'.

What kind of business is it starkadder if you don't mind me asking?

It's boring business consultancy :) Wish it was lovely wedding cakes...but I don't think many people would pay money for a cake out of my kitchen.

I just thought - if I wait till my childbearing years are over, I'll be too old and past it and the opportunity will be gone. Yep, it will be hard...and maybe I'll fail... but waiting for the "perfect time" (either for babies or business) just isn't realistic either.

TCM - yes, definitely take the attitude that they are both exciting ventures and just go with it :)

Stark - I can only imagine how difficult it must be to be positive about a pregnancy after many miscarriages :( but fingers crossed that your baby and your business both do well. Having more than one thing to focus on is always a good thing! You will find a way to make it work :)

Starkadder - business consultancy is not boring when your business needs some consultancy! You sound very accomplished. Good luck with it all - went to a new business exhibition the other week and it was so useful. Got loads of advice about marketing and how to use social media for your business. It's very exciting.

Chipping - agree that it can be a good thing to have more than one thing to focus on. That way, if one thing is not going as planned, you can still feel optimistic about something else.

Emma - congrats on your wedding! It can be stressful but it's so very exciting :) Good luck with TTC honey - maybe your future baby is very proper and doesn't want to be conceived out of wedlock? ;)
