Me and my DH are hoping to start TTC in the next few months, how long is best to be off the pill before TTC?

We are complete newbies and there is lots of varying advice so i thought i would ask you lovely ladies who has probably been there and knows a heck of a lot more than me! Grin

Good luck! I stopped The pill in Sept and started TTC in Jan, got my positive on my fourth cycle. 3 months seems to be standard, but others take much longer to resume a normal cycle and I've also heard that you get a fertility spike just after coming off the pill (science of this is unknown). For me, getting the pill hormones out of my system was my main aim, but my cycle has always resumed normally straight off the pill.

Have fun trying and fx for you!

  • sorry I should clarify that I mean I conceived on the fourth cycle of active TTC

Hi Failsafe. From personal experience I would recommend you get off them asap and make do with condoms until you actually want to start trying. I came off in January and have still only had one natural period. Not pregnant ? I've checked hundreds of times!
I'm sure loads of people settle down immediately, but I would play it safe and come of early, especially if you want to date things accurately and know what's what. Two week waits that go on for months are really no fun at all!!
Good luck!!

Ghosteditor is right, you do get a spike when you come off the pill, for the same reason that you need to use different protection if you miss a pill. I got BFP on my first cycle of coming off the pill (was a bit of a shock to be honest, we'd planned for it to take a couple of months at least)

I think you will get a lot of different advice on here though, as different ladies will have different experiences

KnittingKnots · 13/05/2011 18:02

Sorry if i came across a bit forceful ? I know there is meant to be a spike immediately after coming off. slimjim is quite right ? it seems to be different for everyone and you can drive yourself crazy trying to second guess what's going to happen!

ghosteditor · 13/05/2011 18:20

Failsafe, I think if you're planning on starting TTC right away ideally, I would just come off the pill and start! No need to stop and wait, the pill hormones aren't a problem - and there's always the risk that your cycles may take a while to settle.

I wish I'd stopped sooner tbh. One been off cerazette 16 months still trying for that bfp.
I have a friend who came off the pill 6 months before she got married and used condoms til her wedding. She didn't want to be a pregnant bride but wanted to fall asap after. That's dedication! But she conceived within 4 months so maybe she had the right idea!

melliebobs · 14/05/2011 18:21

i came off the pill earlier this year. It said in the leaflet that when you come off them use condoms until you get your first proper period cos it can take anything up to 6 months to get regular periods again. But i think some of that is just to stop any confusion of you get a bfp in the first cycle. But even then i sussed when it comes to a scan they'd get a date from there. So we just started the month I stopped taking them

montymum · 14/05/2011 20:03

I am in the same position stopped taking pill last month and want to get all the horemones out of my system having fallen pregnant twice previously while taking the pill and mc both times. Using condoms at the moment and plan to start ttc in July. Although feeling very sick and dizzy the past few days so maybe the condoms have failed!!

no1childminder · 15/05/2011 00:36

I was on the pill for 11yrs before TTC. Waited for one period, which came 43days after taking last one! and got pregnant straight away. everyone is different tho. unfortunately i had a mmc found at 12wk scan.

Bexamundo · 15/05/2011 09:17

Sorry to hear about your mmc no1. I think that's why they suggest using alternative contraceptives while the pill leaves your system, because of the increased risk of mmc. Of course done women don't have a problem. Anecdotally the POP is associated with a high risk of mmc early on after taking the pill and a longer time to conceive but a doc would say it's not proven.
