Hi all

I MMC in nov last year and ever since then every time we try and conceive i have had a bout of cystitis! I am doing everything right, going to the loo and showering drinking plenty but i just keep getting it!

GP doesnt seem overly worried and says some women are just prone to it!

trouble is its actually putting me off trying!!!!

any advice or help appreciated!

Hi Cazm2.
I am a cystitis sufferer too. After being fobbed off many times by my GP I have gone to see a urogynaecologise who recommends the following:
Wear only cotton pants, no g-strings
Wipe from front to back
Drink still mineral water
Cut out alcohol, caffeine, carbonated drinks and fruit juices (except cranberry which you can drink in bucketloads)
Wash & wee before sex
Partner must wash before sex
Wash & wee after sex

Now all this was still not working for me and I was still getting cystitis after sex. I had a cystoscopy where the doctor put a camera into my bladder and took a biopsy from my bladder wall. I had chronic bacterial cystitis which is bacteria living in my bladder (v common). So now I am on a long course of antibiotics and eventually I will need to take an antibiotic every time we have sex. I don't mind though, it's worth it to be free of the constant weeing.

Really hope that helps. Don't suffer in silence and ignore the "prone to it" thing. It's complete crap!

Yes, to all of the above, and don't use coloured toilet paper or bubble bath!!

I used to get it really badly for about 5 years solid. then one day it just stopped, still don't know why. But other people I've spoken to say the same thing happened to them.

Of course, in the meantime, do all the investigation you can ? there may be a solution. I saw a specialist who wanted to widen my urethra (tmi, sorry!), which i didn't think sounded that great, to be honest. Then they gave me antibiotics (like yours probably, chances) to take every time i had sex. I'm sure they work, but I just didn't like the idea of taking that many. Makes me sound a bit of a hippy, which I'm not, but i was worried that if i took too many they might stop working when i really needed them (I doubt there is any scientific evidence for this, but there you go Hmm). In the end, like I said, it just went away by itself.

But bubblebath is a big big no no. Especially purple, for some reason. Purple radox = Baaaad

Fingers crossed you both get better soon, people don't realise how much it affects your life. they just make dumb jokes about how you're shagging too much!

I've been there.
The thought of never wanting to be more than 5 minutes from a loo!

I found that I need to haev a bath, rather than a shower, at least once a week to keep it at bay. Also, Ocean Spray cranberry juice, no other brand.
I never travel without a pack of Canesten Oasis.

thanks ladies. it just seems to have flared up again for some unknown reason!! its very annoying. i havent had it for 15 years until after my miscarriage.

i am tempted to go back to gp as its so crippling when i have it it gets to the point where i am peeing blood in my urine!!

also i dont want to keep taking antibiotics!!!

its just annoying as i do all the things like wash and wee etc no bubble bath and i cant get rid of it! i am sending DH for urine test to check!

I really suffered with this years ago but then found a book by a woman who had it straight for about fifteen years and had to figure out her own cures as gp's had no answers. Will check the name when I get home as I found it really helped - in particular there's a bit about drinking a set amount of water at set intervals at the very first tiny sign and that really helps it stop developing in first place. Really hope it helps as it is truly awful and unless you've had it people just dont understand how unfomfortable it is.

Jamiesmagictorch · 11/05/2011 19:09

Sorry. I know how annoying it is and it does put you off when you know the outcome is pain and irritation. Can I recommend using cranberry capsules? You can get them in holland and Barrett and without being overdramatic they have changed my life! Before them I had operations to stretch bladder tubes and endless antibiotics and now as soon as fell the wee tingle that let's me know another bout is coming I gub as many as I can fit in my mouth! I also drink loads of liquids but completely avoid tea and milk as this seems to make it worse. Hope this helps. Good luck!

The book I read was by Angela Kilmartin and is called 'the patients encyclopaedia of cystitis'. She's not a dr and is quite clear on that but some of her suggestions really do help.

I used to really suffer, and the only thing that helped me was cranberry juice as a preventative measure, I drink a glass of cranberry juice every single day and now hardly ever have an attack. If I do start to get that tingle sensation at it's starting, I have a bath with no bubble bath, immediately, take some Nurofen Plus, put a hot water bottle on my tummy and bladder and drink pints of diluted cranberry juice.

Hope you manage to get some relief as it really is horrible and makes you so miserable.

I used to suffer from this but realised that it was the position we were using during sex that was the problem.

Missionary with quite close pelvic grinding = very bad. Any other position including missionary with DP elevated off me = no cystitis to the point I don't even need to pee straight afterwards any more!

I can't see full fat coke helping because of all the sugar in there...
