Conception

When's the best time to get pregnant? Use our interactive ovulation calculator to work out when you're most fertile and most likely to conceive.

Could someone please explain to someone who really should know.....!

OK so I am (supposedly!) a reasonably well educated lady! And one who does have access to Google! However as I have had such fun being a MN lurker for yonks, thought I might ask here!

So... you know EWM and ovulation, SWI around that time etc.............. (sounding thick already!) Do you all concentrate on this time because it's the BEST time or the ONLY time, if you see what I mean!!

A little background- been broody for years (see lurkerage on here, baby names sites etc!) Been with boyf for years: he's finally relented (!)

All my close friends (bar one) have conceived accidentally/ 1st or 2nd month. We tried last month and got nothing..... >STAMPS FEET!< Boooooooooo! So- if there's such a tight window, how are there so many lucky buggers that have accidents?!!!!

Takes seat and contemplates long road ahead<

The advised way to do it is around every other day from the end of your period onwards. But frankly, me and hubby are weekend sh@ggers but that is not always going to hit the right time, so we add in weekdays when fertile time falls then.

Every other day through the month would simply not work for us as we both have busy full time jobs with gym visits/work functions/socialising in the evenings. Also you are likely to feel most horny when you are fertile so listen to your body!

well, you normally only release one egg, once a cycle (yes, there are exceptions but they are just that, exceptions).

Sperm can live only a limited amount of time once they've been fired, 2-5 days if they're in fertile cervical fluid, less outside of that window, and your egg once it's been released only has a limited amount of time to get fertilised - about 24hrs.

So once the egg is released, it is THE ONLY time.

As for the 'why are there so many lucky buggers that have accidents' - IMO people don't tend to openly say 'yeah, we got pregnant and it took us aaaaaaaaages, amazing huh!' - people only talk about the time it takes if it was super-quick either in a genuinely stunned and surprised way or a slightly smug how-fertile-we-are way.

Each cycle, the odds are against getting pregnant, and each cycle the previous cycle's result doesn't affect this one...it's about 25% even if you get the timing right, each time. But by even by those odds if you had 100 healthy women under the age of 35 starting out at the beginning of the year, nearly three-quarters will be pregnant after 6 cycles and close to 95% should be pg before the year is out. That's why they say to wait a year before fronting up for investigations (for under 35s).

Good luck!

Oh thanks both! (Altho beginning to see that even spoilt brat stamping ain't gonna help!)

I can see myself getting addicted to this site!

Being the black sheep of the group and having fended off 'when are you two trying' for 5+ years, the first my RL friends will be hearing of this time of TTC will be after the event!

Thank you for being here with me!
