Getting my life in order before ttc

So, OH and I are waiting until we're married before ttc, which will be at least 6 months but hopefully no more than a year (not engaged yet!). So I'm trying to use this year to get everything in order before starting to ttc... Any top tips from others as to what I need to be doing? List currently includes:

dieting,
getting fit,
paying off as much mortgage as possible,
Had smear (ouch),
learning to drive,

which are all kind of dull and worthy! Are there others in a similar position to me, or advice from those more experienced than me welcome. As well as fun suggestions to help me fight the broodiness and embrace my current freedom?!

Hello :) I too am in the same stage of life as you. We are getting married in November and then will be TTC after the honeymoon. Honeymoon will be in Disneyworld Florida so don't want to start trying and going on roller coasters next day! Probably not a good idea.

I'm trying to eat healthier, lose some weight (I'm 13.5 stone so want to lose about 3 stone) and have also decided to come off the pill in September to get my body prepared. Are you on any birth control like the pill?

Remember to start taking folic acid when you start TTC :)

Also, over the last year and over the next 6 months I am doing lots of things that I have always wanted to do. Things that wouldn't be so easy when I've had kids. Like going to New York, going on a girly holiday, going to lots of gigs, partying with my friends and the like. I'm not loaded btw, we saved up majorly a while back and I'm good at finding cheap deals ;)

I'm so excited that in about 7 months I will be TTC. I'm worried I will have problems but then I guess everyone worries about that. Just got to wait and see. I have felt 'ready' for a while now and always watching baby programmes on tv and looking at little outfits. Right now I just have to keep myself busy with my 6 rats to look after!

Travel anywhere exotic that you have always wanted to go to and might be tricky when PG or with a small sprog. I went to Borneo for my honeymoon last year and LOVED it and would like to go to more exotic places but most of them require malarial drugs which are not TTC-compatible!

If you enjoy gigs or the theatre or music festivals, fit those in as they are much trickier with sprogs.

I think current advice is to start your folic acid 3 months before you start trying.

I have always kept a note in my diary of my cycle and when I feel my ovulation pains (so I could try to predict when I would get my next period). If you don't do this, it might be useful so start so you start to become aware of when you are most fertile. Some people chart before they start TTC but I had not even heard of charting before I started frequenting conception boards after a few months of unsuccessful trying and personally I think that is putting too much pressure on TTC to begin with.

If you are on hormonal contraception, some people suggest stopping it a few months before you start trying to let your cycle get back to normal. However, some people seem to have a fertile surge just after they stop, so you need to make your own choice on that one.

Enjoy your last months of freedom!

Go to the dentist and make sure your oral health is top notch before you start, you can have terrible gum problems in pg.

A really good holiday

Ah, thanks all. Glad to hear I'm not the only one getting my life in order ready for kick off! All your above really helped, and I'm reassured to see that I'm actually tucking almost everything off, including that much dreaded dental visit...

I did recently come off the pill for health reasons, and I'm reluctant to try anything else as I wanted to give my body a chance to settle down. So actually I might get a bfp earlier than planned!

Really good ideas about holidays, it really hadn't occurred to me... Perhaps I'm not as ready ai like to think I am! I shall start twisting OH arm tonight :) I fancy somewhere v hot and sunny and exotic...

Good luck ratata with your wedding and ttc Grin
