Should hsg hurt?

I had a hsg yesterday and had been prepared for some 'discomfort' and had taken a couple of painkillers beforehand, but I found the most painful part to be when the dye was put through the tubes, and it hurt considerably more than I expected. Is this normal, as everything I'd read beforehand didn't really mention this and I'm now worrying that I've got something wrong with my tubes or something?!

The results were all clear, and the doctor said it was all fine, but I was hoping others might be able to reassure me that they had the same experience and that the dye bit is supposed to feel like that. I've also had a bit of bleeding yesterday and today, which I assume is to be expected but they didn't actually warn me about this.

A friend who had it told me it was v painful so I think your experience is normal.

totally normal, the dye tends to "flush out" quite a bit of gunk (always good when ttc) take some paracetomol and use a sanitary towel. they should have warned you though.

Thankyou ladies - I'll be recovering from the experience with a large glass of cold wine this evening. Thanks for the reassurance x

hi i had one donr on the 8th feb,it was very painful i was in agony afterwards as well i couldn't even walk just stayed in my bed all day.
dr said that no fluid was going through my tubes and said my tubes may have been going into spasams, but wanted to book me in for keyhole to make sure,my next appt is on the 18th but guess what iam pregnant which i thought would never happen!! as she did sort of say my tubes were blocked.but i have been reading alot of people have fallen pregnant after this test so fingers crossed you could be one of them like me :)

I found it pretty ghastly, tbh. I think your experience sounds normal.

Ooh congrats gina I hope so too!!!

I must've read all the wrong info beforehand because I wasn't expecting it to be too bad - wouldn't have another one!

Mine didn't hurt at all when I had mine done, BUT I was warned that it can be painful if your tubes spasm when the dye's put through. This is pretty normal and maybe it's what happened to you, Pink?

chocolatecoveredlissielou · 10/04/2011 15:50

when I had mine it was fecking agony. the doctor said, "there is a blockage on your left tube, just trying to dislodge it" to which I replied "I have no left tube, it was removed a year ago"

ouch
