Hi

Wonder if anyone had any advice - my husband and I are trying for another baby - we have a ds who is 3 and a half and we have tried for five months but to no avail. I am 37, he is 36 and we both work full-time, are probably stressed out, he works night times too as well as weekends and I drink too much. Is there any hope for us?

I use fertility charts but they aren't working.

All my friends are pregnant and I am frightened that I will miss the boat as it were.
Anyone got any tips???

Baba,

Wouldyou be willing to see your GP and discuss your problems re ttc?. This is something I would urge you to consider now. The general consensus seems to be that gynaes like to see women over the age of 35 if they have been ttc for six months without success.

Was your first child conceived quite quickly or did this take some months? (i.e more than 12).

Stressful lives can play a part but if there is an underlying physical problem with either of you then this would not be due to stress.

If your periods have changed in terms of cycle length, duration and/or pain then it is worth paying a visit to the docs now. A blood test can be done to see what your hormone levels are like and to see if there are any problems in this regard. If your periods have become more irregular hormonal imbalances are often to blame.

Fertility charts are not of much benefit if your periods are irregular anyway.

Can you cut down on the drinking?. Generally speaking this can affect ttc as well (alcohol also has a deleterious effect on sperm counts).

HTH

Thanks so much for your helpful advice. It is me who drinks too much and not my husband so his sperms are probably ok as he hardly drinks at all, although he is a workaholic. We conceived ds after 3 months so we were obviously in working order 3 years ago. We have been trying for a baby since June so a good few months. I decided to give it till Christmas and then go to the docs, like you say I did read that after six months for over 35 is when you should get checked out. Due on 11th so fingers crossed we might have conceived this month.

We are going on a trial for a BBC programme on 25th November called Making a Baby and they have the top sperm doctor and fertility experts. They pick 10 out of the 100 couples who go to star in the programme and follow them for a year to see if they conceive. I have been told that we will be on because I suffered so badly from hyperemis gravidarum the last time and was on a drip for a lot of my pregnancy so we should get all these tests for free anyway!!

Anyway, will take your advice on board. Any other tips from anyone else? Standing on my head??

i was in the same situation three years ago, we were trying for 10mths then dh and i had an argument so decided to stop trying.sure enough i was pregnant a month later.when i was trying i always had at the back of my mind was that the one, when actually when you are just having fun sex your cervix dips down further to recieve the sperm. so if anything dont try just have a passioate time and see what happens. a friend of mine had accupuncture and it worked for her. good luck

Theres quite a few of us on a ttc thread, beanies by next august one. I am pretty much in the same position as you except I got pregnant first time last time and am 2 years older. Have started to have tests, all clear so far. Lots of people have lots of tips that worked for them but having tried most of them they are not 100%
