Hi. We've decided to ttc this month. I took the pill for the first 2 days of my period and have now stopped. Do you think this will have messed up my cycle this month? Will I still ovulate despite taking the first 2 pills in the packet? Also how far do people go when tt with changing their diets? Just eat healthily or cut out all the crap completely. TIA!!

I conceived the first month of trying and I had taken 1 pill of a packet.

Also, eat healthily but don't cut out all the crap, a bit of what you fancy does you good!

I didn't change my diet at all! Did take folic acid in a multivitamin formula though, and I don't eat loads of junk.
Relax! You'll be fine.

You should take folic acid 3 months before you try to conceive (maybe I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here, apologies if so...)

Distracted - it's a bit late for that now, or are you suggesting waiting for 3 months. I've started taking it this weekend.

I'm not keen on waiting for 3 months!! Want to get going with ttc

I do know 2 friends who have horror stories to tell about conceiving babies with severe spina bifida, purely caused by folic acid deficiency (neither had taken folic acid). The most important thing to prevent spina bifida is to take the folic acid before conception (the 3 months afterwards doesn't seem so important as the problem is caused at conception).

I feel quite strongly on this because of what these friends went through. But I'm at risk of lecturing here, so I'll shut up at this point...

blimey that is very scary. How long do you recommend taking it before conception? What other food is it in? I have a vague notion about broccoli but not sure if i'm right. good luck dooley

when we do the booking appointment for your start into the midwifery service, one of the questions we ask is about folic acid, was it taken pre or post conception and the majority of women take it post conceptually even if they have bee ttc. i wouldn't worry too much though as if you eat manufactured bread and ceareals these both contain added folic acid and so do many more products.

Distracted · 30/10/2005 20:37

If you start taking it now it would be pre-conception.

Food sources are I think leafy green veg (spinach is really good), avocado, lentils and there's some in potatoes and milk (oh and marmite, of course). Think maybe it's in things like oatmeal as well. Most breakfast cereals are fortified with it.

Sorry didn't mean to scare anyone

distracted, it does make sense if you know that the spine forms from really early on and the neural tube closes at about 5 weeks (when foetus is only about 2 weeks).
