6 tests say I'm pregnant, 1 says I'm not - which to believe?

I had a doctors appointment at 5.40pm today because my last period was 80 days ago and I wanted to know where it had gone. I've tested before, but got negatives. Last tested 2 weeks ago. Did a test at around 4.30pm today just in case (one of the amazon cheapie ones) - it came up positive. A further 2 came up the same. I went to the appointment, and told my doctor, who had a student do another test which apparently came up negative. He gave me 2 tests to do at a later time.

I just did a cheapie, a Clearblue and one of the freebies from the doctor - all say I am pregnant.

I wouldn't even ask the question, because the student clearly didn't give enough time for the test to develop (it took around 3 minutes for a clear line to show on the one I did), but I am booked in for loop diathermy on 4th May, which I can't have if I'm pregnant.

What do I do now?

its a comman belief supported by hcp that you can get a false positive but not a false negative push for an early scanxxx good luck

You're extremely likely to be pregnant: v.v.rare to have a false positive.

ttalloo · 01/04/2011 19:14

I agree - a false positive is apparently impossible because the stick can't detect what isn't there, whereas false negatives can happen if you have a dodgy stick or test later in the day.

If your last period was 80 days ago then you must be coming up for the 12-week scan, but I would push for an early one as charmum says, so that you know exactly what's going on.

Good luck.

I just can't believe the doctor didn't even offer to retest. And I just can't believe that 6 tests could give a false positive.

I'm disappointed that I wasn't taken more seriously. And now I have to spend the weekend worrying. GRRR!

Defo pregnant cant get a false positive def not 6

I agree, you need to push for an ultrasound scan so they cam date the pregnancy. Six positive tests is just about impossible, especially if one was a clearblue. I find the line comes up immediately with a first response unless testing very early, but always takes time with a cheapie.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for replying, and for the advice. I did the last freebie test that the doctor gave me this morning - positive. I will call my doctor on Monday and push for an ultrasound.

When I wanted an early scan I phoned the hospital and a sympathetic midwife who knew I had had a m/c got me in for an early scan. Good luck!

Folicacid · 02/04/2011 15:19

To be honest I wouldn't bother with the GP again. I would google the details of your local early pregnancy unit at your local hospital ( or just call main hospital switchboard) and never mind the GP. Round here it's the midwives and hospital who give care throughout pregnancy and the GPs are nonentities in the process.

If you tell them you have a loop diathermy booked for very soon and never mind that but also that you could feasibly be coming up for 12 week scan including nuchal and I think they would scan you now.

willitbe · 02/04/2011 18:19

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Just a quick warning: if you go for a scan and they find nothing, do get a quantative hcg blood test done before commiting to the op. It is possible since you had one negative that your tests are not coming up instantly, that you might be only in the early stages of pregnancy rather than nearer to 12 weeks!

I hope it all goes well!

Hi, you can have false positive. I've had three caused by cysts. They're Soul destroying.
