OPKs - do they always detect ov?

Just a quickie - mmc & ERPC on 16 December, AF came 3.5 weeks after - got a smiley face on my disposable clear blue OPK on day 11 last cycle - this cycle on Day 14 and still no smiley face - could it have missed OV, or could my cycles just be all over the place? feeling some tenderness in my groin today... will be doing some baby dancing later just in case, but is it normal for OV to be on very different days in your cycle? Any help appreciated? Thank you.

My ovulation days vary quite a bit and I think it's worse if I'm waiting for it! I used an O.P.K for the first time this month and been reading a bit on here about them! apparently you should do them at nearly the same time every day and not first thing in the morning and sometimes if you drink too much it can dilute the LH surge. My ov days usually vary from day 15-18 but on occasions it has been a little longer like this month!

i think on fertility friends website it says sometimes they dont pick it up so do lots of swi anyway..

It doesn't detect ovulation, only the hormonal surge that precedes ovulation. So you can get a smiley face but it doesn't signify ovulation sometimes. So I'd carry on having regular sex (every other day is enough) and see what happens. You may have missed the surge.

I'm sorry for your mmc.

I never ad a smiley face or anything close to one...but I have a son! Do not rye on them. Have you tried temperature charating? May be worth considering...?

katherine2008 · 17/02/2011 09:53

Thank you for good advice! Yes I have been temperature charting, but I don't seem to be any good at it!! I don't get up at the same time every day but within about 45 minutes. I have a different temperature in each ear and if I try the same ear twice I get a different temperature within seconds of the two tests!! Should I just go for the same ear every day and the first test?!!!! Last month there was not noticable dip or peak?

Katherine, are you using a BBT thermometer designed for fertility monitoring? Has to be accurate to .00 degrees. Just you mentioned an ear thermometer.

Are you using Fertility Friend? It will tell you if your temps add up to an ovulatory pattern without you needing to work it out.

katherine2008 · 17/02/2011 20:13

ah no - I didn't realise that. I shall look into getting one Blush

Buy a BBT thermometer, I got mine from the site Access Diagnostics and take your temp in your mouth and then sign up for the free service from Fertility Friend, that should help, plus they have a charting help course that is useful if you are just starting.

thank you that's great
