Anyone got pregnant on Metformin?

I have PCOS.

Recently started taking 1500mg of Metformin every day. I wondered if any ladies out there have managed to conceive successfully on Metformin?

Help appreciated!

Yes. I was on 1500mg of Metformin due to PCOS. After 2.5 weeks, all the cysts on my ovaries were gone and I conceived about 5 days after that :). Good luck hope the side effects are ok. I found they subsided pretty quick as long as I avoided high fat foods.

Hi, I've conceived twice on metformin. DD who's now 3 and my current pregnancy (I'm 15weeks). My BMI was within the normal range which I think makes a difference. Good luck!

Hi I conceived on metformin and I was on the mini pill!

It all went a bit wrong on a mad holidayto Thailand and the pill taking was a little erratic. I was a little laissez faire about it as I thought I couldn't get pregnant anyway!

Mine was for PCOS too not diabetes. I lost weight too, and all cysts departed on my first scan!

Good luck, persevere and keep up your B vitamin intake and iron. there is a PCOS diet book around too which is very helpful.

I was told there is a B vitamin inositol that is good for PCOS, only thing I could find it in was Red Bull though?

Thanks so much Ladies... Been trying for over a year for a little one. Had a miscarriage in October and now on Metformin. Your words were really encouraging.

Binfull - thanks so much for the PCOS book recommendation - will buy it on Amazon this afternoon.

I've been on Metformin since Sept for PCOS. Last 2 months I've finally had a 31 day cycle.

Your stories give me confidence. Can I ask, has anyone got high BMI with their PCOS???

The Metformin was described to bring down my BMI but it only did a little bit!

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 06/02/2011 22:49

I did have a slightly higher BMI and funnily was just told it was my fault over eating etc.

When I got pregnant I lost 3 stone, I think having normal levels of testosterone and oestrogen helped. I maintained the same diet.

Organic food, raw and fresh food defo helps. If not organic I was recommended to wash veg in white wine vinegar to remove chemicals. You have to work harder to shift the pounds though without a doubt.

If I can maintain a healthy bmi I get a more regular cycle. I got prescribed a drug to help with heavy bloodless too transexamic acid. That has been wonderful in making the usual nightmare periods manageable.

Thanks for the advice Bin I manged to lose a stone over 2 years but am stuck! I've tried the Low GI diet but like I said it's not helping anymore. When I up my exercise I tone rather than lose mass (if that makes sense). Weight watchers also had me putting on weight & was made to feel I was doing something wrong! PCOS is bloody horrible. Yep the heavy bloodloss is def unmanageable at times!!!

Well done on the 2 stone fairy - I know how hard it is. I am on slimming world to lose a bit more now as the gain came on after my pregnancy ended and crept up quite quickly.

I have lost half a stone in 2 weeks, am so over the moon. All fresh fruit and veg is giving me so much energy at the moment.

Hope it goes well for you. After just finshing the most horrendous period ( lost a blood clot the size of my palm in a meeting in work, had to wait till everyone left, then stagger to the toilet and try and clean myself up with tissues - thank god I had black leggings on!)

Good job I can laugh about these things - must get some more tablets from the uk when I am home next!

Fairygodmother1 · 12/02/2011 21:03

We really do go through it with PCOS. When I said I bleeding heavily & major clots I was told it wasn't 'serious' - feels like it to me!!!!

I'm on a veggie kick at the mo so hopefully see some results too!

Can I ask, has anyone got advice about Vitamins - I take mum-to-be/conception tablets, Vit C & Omega 3. I know I need to up Vit B but do I get a complex one?

Thanks

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 12/02/2011 23:22

It is worth speaking to a pharmacist about getting the correct one with B8 in it.

I take a complex for energy release which helps when on a diet too.
