ttc with overactive thyroid

Anyone else got an overactive thyroid? I've just been diagnosed. All my friends are so jealous that I'm losing weight without trying, but I'm not bothered about the weight, I'm not having periods, so there's no point even trying! It's crap! So anyone else out there, how long does it take for the meds to work and for periods to come back?

Hi there. I was diagnosed with Graves after DD was born and unfortunately it took a while for them to sort my meds out (but I do gather that I had a very extreme case). Was stable on blockage dose of carbimazole and throxine when got pregnant with DS so it can happen. I relapsed again after DS and was on meds for another 18 months. Have been off now since October and still fine. The docs will do all they can to get you stable asap.

And FWIW when I got pregnant with DD before the thyroid problems started I'd come off the pill 4 months previously and hadn't had a period - so you never know and definitely shouldn't stop trying.

Had an episode of overactive thyroid a few years back. If I remember right, it took about a month for the blocking medication to kick in (carbimazole), then a while to get the dose of replacement thyroxine right. Good news is you'll start to feel loads better over the course of that first month. (I kept having periods, but they were extraordinarily and unusually painful until the medication started to work). Check with your GP/consultant - I think carbimazole is contra-indicated if you're pregnant/ttc, but there is another drug they can use instead.
