Acupuncture

Hi all,

History - DH & I have been trying for a baby for around 6 months, with no joy Sad

A friend of mine said one of her friends recommended acupuncture. This friend states she got pg within the month!

I wondered if anyone has had it done to help conception, what are your thoughts / Pro & Con's / what should I look our for in a practitioner?

I got pregnant after 17 years of infertility, after a couple of reflexology sessions. The reflexolgy wass for work related stress, but I can't rule out that it kick started my fertility.

I have since read that it can help, so maybe give it a try.

Hi my friend said reflexology worked for her TTC#2 so I'm going to give it a whirl, will let you know if it works!

I would recommend it. It has helped many people I know and I was having it when I got pregnant.

I had acupuncture whilst undergoing a cycle of IVF - totally didn't work for me, especially as I couldn't relax with those needles in me. And, I didn't conceive.

Managed to get pregnant both times I underwent IVF without acupuncture though.

Sorry, I'm a bit sceptical about acupuncture now, but have heard that reflexology can work wonders.

I don't think it will do anything, but the placebo effect can work wonders.

If you can afford it it certainly won't do any harm.

If you are considering acupuncture you need to consult a therapist who specialises in Fertility, IVF/IUI support. Many are affiliated to Zita West's Network for Reproductive Health.
Accupuncture may help simply by reducing stress and anxiety.

I think you have to be realistic about these kinds of stories, not everyone who has acupuncture will get pregnant. However I had acupuncture when going through IVF and one thing it really did do for me was chill me out completely. I was a massive sceptic about this kind of thing and found it hard to suspend my disbelief during the first couple of sessions but by that point was prepared to do anything to help the IVF work.

What to look out for? You need to make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing and who practices specifically for fertility issues. if you can get a recommendation then all the better.

Hey Cookie, I have just booked my first ever session for Tuesday in London as DH and I have been TTC #1 since May (1mc). Getting to the point of trying anything and if it relaxes and calms me down a bit more so much the better! I am not so naive to believe it will work straight away but having read so many positive things about it especially from past threads on MN, I am secretly hoping and it has def worked for many people. I am getting it to extend my LP.

Hey all!! Thanks for your responses.

I have enquired about reflexology with a few local practitioners, so lets see what happens. Will keep you posted. If anything I think it will chill me out a bit as I do have a fairy stressful job. Tootiredtogoogle - I also felt that I could not relax with all those needles, which was putting me off. Thanks to those that recommended reflexology.

Bexamundo, TanteAC & Angster - good luck with your treatments, keep me posted on how you get on.

I have had acupuncture and it really really does not hurt at all. It is very relaxing lying there once all the needles are in.

Came back to update (no drum roll, am not pg!)

I am absolutely LOVING acupunture. It is soooo relaxing and positive, and I definitely feel better already.

Whether or not it is placebo, I don't care! It is only £30 a go, so not overly expensive, is a lovely indulgence and if it works in the babymaking sense, then I am going to become an official spokesperson (or something!)

It also makes me have a gorgeous night's sleep afterwards. If you are in London and want a recommendation, pm me.

Sorry if i seem a bit dim but whats the difference between acupuncture and reflexology. Is one using needle and the other just massaging??? been ttc for nearly 3 years and i'm willing to give anything a go.

Reflexology is feet, isn't it? And acupuncture is everywhere(or can be!)

Also no needles in reflexology

Hey all,

Lovely to hear from you all. I went for a reflexology session last month and will do another this month. It was lovely. If you don't like anyone touching your feet it is not for you!! There are no needles. I don,t know the details on accpuncture.
My job is quite stressful so nice to have a chill out session. I am going to give it a few more months then try accupuncture. I know accupuncture has more of a reputation for working.
No bfp this month, boo hiss however its nice to find some calm in this madness. Happy weekend all x x

Update on my acupuncture which I started at beginning of month.....wait for it but am not preggers either! it hasn't extended my luteal phase either but I didn't go in being naive, he told me it would take a few cycles. I must say I love it too! It doesn't hurt, it's relaxing and my acupuncturist discusses my cycles every week and talks about when I get pregnant again and not if so that makes me feel positive. I have become much less obsessive aboutthe TTC malarky...well this month anyhow.

I had acupuncture around the time I conceived last year after 3 years pf gradually more determined failing trying. I don't know how much it contributed as we were trying so many other things (vits charting lifestyle etc) but I do know not only was it relaxing but my acupuncturist also gave me loads if advice and helped me understand my body and reproductive cycle better which can only have helped and made me feel less frustrated.

I had my first child last year just before my 42nd birthday - used acupuncture to help conceive. Had a great pregnancy and birth - at the birthing unit they asked if I had been using acupuncture or relexology as they saw a link between this and relatively easy births.

I'm a huge fan as you can tell. You need to get someone who specialises in fertility.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
