How accurate is early testing?

Period due Monday. Did a superdrug preg test with FMU: negative. Is this inconclusive that I'm not pregnant? Anyone used early tests a few days before- negative turning positive? Chances? Wanted to know if I can paint the town red tonight as it's my birthday! But if there's a chance of pregnancy? Please help!

Yes I did one of those early tests with my ds, I took it and was negative.I was really fed up but It was weird because I felt like I was pregnant (going on how I felt with dd)

So my period still never came, so I did another test, still negative.About a week later I did another test and the line was very faint. So I went to the doctors to confirm it.

But not all of them are that reliable, but if you are unsure just go see your gp or nurse.

hi wishin, I haven't tested early myself, but have seen a huge number of threads that advise not to test early because even the pg tests specifically designed for early testing are about 50% accurate before your AF.

You really can't know until you are late and test. It all depends on hormone levels which is what the tests pick up on, and everyone responds differently.

But good luck and of course happy birthday!

(I also want to add that even if you are pg you wouldn't be sharing a blood supply with the baby at this stage, though of course there is a lot of conflicting advice about whether it is ok to drink while trying to conceive).

Mommmy and Ghost: Thankyou so very much for your invaluable advice. Been ttc for almost a year now. Me: 40 today, him 43. Last chance saloon really. No dc. Too busy chasing the career pot at the end of the rainbow. Fertility tests on both of us fine. Don't want to jeopardise even the tiniest chance- although completely symptom free. I think I will just drink in moderation: I am 40 after all! Good luck to you girls, fx for us too please: if you will! Front page of daily mail made depressing reading today: as if it was completely aimed at me. Oh well...what will be will be, que sera sera.....

Happy birthday, they say things happen when you least expect them, your not past your cell by date yet Wink

Have a nice day and of course fingers crossed for you and your partner Grin

nannyl · 28/01/2011 10:21

i used a 6day early test (that you can use 5 days before period due) and got a BFP 4 days before period due

Wishinandahopin · 28/01/2011 10:28

Thankyou so very much. It means more to me than you will ever know. Today's headline in the daily mirror begs to differ: either I will find it very difficult to get pregnant or I will go on to miscarry at 40! (see how I thought it was a personal attack on my birthday! ).
I hope I can bring good news early next week. Thankyou Sooooo much for your kind wishes xxx

My mom was 40 with my little sister, yes these things do happen but don't let it put a downer on it.My little sister is fine and now 16! Have a good day x

Wishinandahopin · 28/01/2011 10:30

Nannyl: so does that mean it's not our month then? It was a 4 day eay from superdrug, FMU, period due Monday: test was negative. It's not looking good is it? Wonder if anyone tested negative this early, only for them to have a positive a bit further along? Or is that just wishful thinking?

hi wishin, a friend of mine had her first two kids in quick succession (she has two boys under 3) in her early 40s and conceived straight away so it's always possible, you just need a bit of luck and a lot of trying! It's great that you have good test results for fertility.

Seriously though, don't read the DM. Ruuuubbish.

And again: early tests have a reasonably high failure rate. Yes, you could get a positive early and all being well you will stay pg. However, you have an equal chance of being pg and the test still showing negative due to your hormone levels not reaching the levels the test requires. Unfortunately of course you may not be pregnant, so all in all, testing early is a bit of a headfuck. People on other threads have referred to early testing as being like peeing on a £5 note!

Loads of MN people have tested early, got BFNs and then got BFPs after a bit of wait. Lots more have had BFNs that stay BFN.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks ghosteditor. You do speak a lot of sense. Like the seeing on a five pound note analogy. Never tested early before. Birthday celebrations, and being on mumsnet recently has slightly turned my head. Thanks for your kind words and thoughts. Will wait until ( hopefully ) I am officially late (please God!). No symptoms to speak of...
