I did a test last monday (I had been feeling sick and ill and tired) and it had a very pale second line but it went after a minute and I assumed that it was because it was the test drying and I was not pg, however this morning I thought I would test to make sure and have a surprise BFP (I was not TTC but we are getting our head round the idea and feeling happy) How do I calculate how far I am and my due date?.

How irregular are your periods? Generally they date the pregnancy from lmp until a scan shows otherwise. Obvious issues with this.

It depends when you ovulated. So two women can start their periods on the same day and one ovulate on day 12, the other have a long cycle and ovulate on day 32. That's 3 weeks difference, making for very different due dates.

Can you say when you ovulated or perhaps pin down when you had sex? I'd assume if it was still a fairly faint line, you'd be only just pg and therefore around 4-5wks but with test limitations and individual differences, this might not be true at all. In fact as you get more pg, the tests fail again anyway I think I read somewhere.

I had a period early Decamber (unsure when) dont know when I ovulated (there is no regularity sometimes 6 weeks sometimes 8 weeks sometimes more before they went like this I had 26 day cycles). I have done another test and it showed up positive my tests have never shown up positive before 5 weeks unless I use FMU. The line is quite clear and thick now and I was 50 % on it being a line last time till it dissapeared, they are clearblue tests (if that makes a difference) I normally use first responce but cannot get a positive with FMU till a few days after my missed period.

So judging by that I must be at least 5 weeks or does it work different in different pg?

No way of knowing. Some pregnancies implant sooner than others, some develop slightly faster than others. Normal levels of hcg vary immensely at this stage. So you can't guess based on the line or what happened in previous pregnancies.

I'd make a best guess at the first day of your last period and calculate from there, tell the midwife/gp (depending on procedure where you are) that you have v irregular cycles and aren't sure at all and then wait for your first scan.

Congratulations, you sound a bit shellshocked tbh. Have you bought some folic acid?

CrawlingInMySkin · 22/01/2011 13:25

I am very shocked I hadn't even thought of folic acid Shock I am going to the shops soon so I will get some then thanks for your help, I will do as you suggest Smile

Don't worry. Am 5wks pg (planned) and can't remember to take it half the time.

You'll be just fine. Smile
