Difficulty Conceiving

Hi Everyone!

I'm sure you get this all the time, but I hope someone can help!

I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis various other alienments! Anyway, a year ago me and my partner started to try and conceive - well it's been a year, and nothings happened! I know we need to go to see our GP and talk about it with them, but to be honest I'm really scared! Incase they say I'm too ill to be a mum, or incase I'm told I won't ever have a baby because of the medication I'm on, or if I'll pass everything on to a baby we have!

Can anyone help? Has anyone been to their GP and can tell me any information? Am I worrying for nothing?

I am sure MNs more qualified than me (who are often on this thread) will respond but I'll add my comments for starters.

But I just wanted to ask if you have been trying the unromanitc way - ovulation sticks, lots of s*x around the time, you on the bottom, lying still afterward etc?

I ask as I have PCOS so bought Zita West's 'Complete guide to getting pregnant' and she (the conception guru some think) said that biggest issue for people attending her clinic was finding and acting on your ovulation. Sorry if that is offensive, but I do know that some people aren't as military about it at first (as I was), so I wanted to ask.

I found the book really helpful. It also featured a case study of somebody conceiving on day 11 of their cycle. Most books say is it day 20 (I think from memory), and as I have a long and generally messed up cycle I would never have thought I could concieve on day 11, but having read the book, I started testing from as soon as my period finished and I conceived on day 11...

If you have been "doing everying you can", then I'd get yourself off to the Doctor's and get investigating. Or even if you haven't I'd be tempted to go and convince them that you need investigations to start. IMO...even if you are younger, having time on your side will always be an advantage.
,so perhaps beter to know sooner rather than later.

A chum of mine has PCOS, she also had to wait a while before she managed to conceive. For a year she took her temperature regularly and she reckons she actually only ovulated once in the whole year, but was incredibly lucky and managed to get pregnant that month. But she was taking very careful measurements to try and track when she was ovulating.
If you have already been trying a year, I would definitely go and see your GP. When I was TTC, I had a mc then nothing for months, I was approaching 35 and getting worried, my GP was great and referred us immediately to the assisted conception unit at the hospital, and by the time my appointment came round I was nearly 2 months pregnant.

To be honest we haven't done any of the ovulation stick/bum in the air methods. We have sex about 4 or 5 times a week, but did have concerns that making sex all about getting pregnant would add pressure on ourselves and would make it unenjoyable! I do try and work out when im ovulating, but with my periods all over the place it is very very difficult!

Thanks for the book reccomendations, Ill have a look at them, suppose we have to admit we need help really and stop just acting like it will happen if we just keep having sex!!!!

I cannot comment on the UC as have no experience of it but do have experience of PCOS as have also been diagnosed with it. It is likely that you are not ovulating regularly if at all currently.

With your medical history and previous PCOS diagnosis I would see the GP asap and ask for an immediate referral to a gynae consultant.

I second Attila - if it ain't happening, then go and get help!

I too have PCOS, and am under a fertility consultant. It isn't scary. There will be a list of things that the GP will want to check and test before referring you on. They will want to check your DH as well as yourself. But it is far better to get yourself seen and find out what the problem is, so that you can get help.

If you have been TTC for a year, and certainly if you have PCOS, there will be good reason to be referred.

Hi I have a friend that had this too and her and her husband were trying for a year and then after a year suddenly she got pregnant. I don't know too much about it but I know she did go to the doctor and it helped her they gave her advise re this and also be able to help you with working out when the best time to Concieve is. She was very worried she couldn't have babies as she had never been pregnant before, anyway on a better note she's pregnant now so t

It is really hard to find information on TTC with UC and PCOS so I suppose our best bet is to go see our GP - Thanks Miffles, it's good to hear it isn't that scary!
