low sperm morphology

We are TTC our 2nd child and found out DH has low sperm morphology(5%) though has a very high overall count. We have been told there is probably only a very small chance of conceiving naturally and only other option is IVF. I am 39 though have good fertility test results and we have tried for 4 months so far. We have decided we wont have IVF mainly due to the cost, so are hoping for a BFP if we keep trying. I was wondering if anyone else is in, or has been in a similar situation and had success?

We're trying for our first and my DH was recently told his morphology is 0% Sad. However, our doctor gave some lifestyle advice and didn't seem to think it was impossible to improve this... but it's hard to be too optimistic all the same.

We've found a number of studies and a blog of a male fertility specialist in the USA which all suggested there might be ways to improve morphology through diet and lifestyle - needless to say DH is now taking all sorts of supplements in the hope they help in some way! Another test is planned so we have everything crossed.

Morphology levels have also been reported to have fallen in average terms over the years.

Having said all that, a level of 5%, while below the average, is still 5%, so keep at it! Wink

A morphology above 4% is now considered fertile by the new the WHO 2010 guidelines. 5% is on the low side, but I think you've still got every chance especially considering your DH had a high overall count. At low morphology and a high count, he could have more normal sperm than somebody with good morphology but a low count. I think you have every chance especially as you already have 1 DC. Good luck!

Hi, what was his count out of interest and who said it would be tricky to conceive? My DH has 7% morphology and was told there was nothing to worry about by the embryologist, his count was high at 63mill. Above 4% is considered 'normal'. Check out dr licciardi blog on sperm morphology, he is a top NY fertility specialist ...
