Contraception issue

Not sure where to post this sorry.

I really need to start some kind of contraception (a year after DD) as we are not planning at the moment and was taken off the combined pill because of a DVT and am not supposed to use it now. I am just wondering what I can use that wouldt put me at risk of another DVT.

I don't fancy the idea of the coil or having anything stuck up me.

What other methods are available ?

I'm assuming all hormonal options (implant, injections) are also out because of risk of DVT? In that case, as you don't fancy the coil, I think it's pretty much barrier methods; the condom and the diaphragm.

If you have had a DVT then you will not be able to use any systemic oestrogen containing hormonal methods.

I would recommend the contraceptive implant, Implanon, which is a progesterone only hormonal method.

Either way, you will need to discuss it with your doctor.

Thanks all,has anyone used an implant or coil,just out of interest. I think I will have a google. Condoms just feel strange at 30 y/o with my husband and plus it just doent feel good which is why I am looking for something else. I am going to have a look too at FAM nan and see what it says.

i suggest you get the "taking charge of your fertility" book
its fab and explains it all in really clearly.

(I think all women should read this book actually, and that girls should be taught it in school!)

I have had both an ordinary copper coil, and the Mirena. I had no problems with the copper coil, though I noticed my periods were lighter once it was removed. Others have had terrible issues with the Mirena, I love mine (and no periods or PMT for years, fabulous!)

How do you feel not having periods though oldlady? Does it feel weird? Can you feel it anything?

The other thing is that personally I don't want to have another child a long way off. (waiting for hubby to actually agree to having another) So how long term is this?

FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC! I honestly don't feel anything at all, neither does DH; I'll admit that perhaps my libido has slipped a bit, but on the other hand I'm also approaching menopausal age, so that could be related.

It was a tiny bit uncomfortable having it fitted, but that's it, over and done with.

I have heard that some areas are difficult about letting you have the Mirena removed after a short time (they take about six months to settle in, and I had sporadic light breakthrough bleeding for that time) so it's worth checking with your local health board/GP to see what their policy is, if it's really short-term contraception that you're after.

By the way, some modern condoms apparently enhance sensation, so a bit of experimentation with different brands might be an idea?

I had an implant.

It stopped my periods and I thought it was fantastic.

It lasts for 3 years.

If you are comfortable with what is required for insertion, then consider a cap. They're very reliable when used correctly (every time, with spermicide, for the right length of time).

Can you get an appointment with eg contraceptive nurse to discuss all the options thoroughly?
