What should I do? I have an appointment tonight to give blood. DH and I are trying and I am 3dpo.

Can I still give blood or is this a bad idea?

Thanks in advance!

Last time I went to give (a few months back) I told them I was taking folic acid when we went through the 'medication' questions and they told me that they would not take my blood if I was TTC and it can depress your fertility for several months. I was surprised but they said they don't list all their potential reasons for saying no on their literature as there are so many.

Hope this helps.

I heard that it's recommended not to, as you need all the blood for you and the baby.

I have given blood 3x a year since 18, and got my 25 donations award - but have taken a break now whilst TTC. IF I was pg during the 2ww and something happened, I'd always regret giving blood. As much as I want to "save a life" think there is a time to be selfish.

Thanks guys, I didn't want to cancel in case it was a rubbish reason - I really feel its important to give if you can, but not going to jeopardise my TTC-ing so will cancel.

No I wouldn't give blood in that situation. Pregnancy can consume iron so you need to keep all your iron.

Probably best...that's exactly how I feel too. Many people don't give and I think it is so important. Hadn't realised what Willbean said though - that they actually don't want us whilst we're TTC!!

WillbeanChariot · 02/11/2010 15:59

Yep I didn't realise it had any effect. Interesting though because if I hadn't told them about the folic acid they would not have asked the question and I would have gone ahead with no idea it could affect fertility.

My DS was extremely premature and had at least half a dozen blood transfusions and probably twice that of platelet transfusions. I used to give blood anyway but now I am even more aware of the importance. DS even inspired totally squeamish reluctant DH to give so he is giving for both of us at the moment. Smile
