Advice about blighted ovum

My period was late this month and got a very faint positive on a home test. Then got a negative but no bleeding. GP's tests were then negative but still no bleeding.

Gp thinks it was a blighted ovum. I am really concerned about having no bleeding. I would have thought the body would need to get rid of everything IYSWIM. Dr just keeps saying 'oh you will bleed eventually.' I questioned if that was a problem and all I get is oh we can't save the pregnancy. I am getting exasperated because I know that and that's not why I was asking. We want to continue ttc and don't know what the implications of this are and can't get a straight answer from GP.

There can be no diagnosis of blighted ovem WITHOUT a scan to confirm.

IME i didnt bleed till i was 13 weeks, after a scan at 7 weeks confirming blighted ovum, so no you may not bleed immediately.
Also i have very strong positives on preg tests, very strong pregnancy symptoms, nausea, painful boobs through out that 13 week period, so a faint positive means very little tbh.

Gp said I didn't need a scan unless I have gone for a few months without bleeding. I also asked the GP but other possible causes of not bleeding, ie that I may never have been pregnant at all but all these were dismissed out of hand by the GP.

I have always self reffered to pregnancy assessment unit, is there one at your local hospital?

brokeoven · 25/10/2010 17:01

Could possibly be a chemical pregnancy.
Either way the not knowing is just awful for you, so at the very least pregnancy assessment will take blood from you to detect level of pregnancy hormone.

You need to know whats what dont you.Sad

There is one brokeoven but they refused to see me. They said if I was no longer pregnant I was no longer pregnant. Do you know if there is a risk of infection if bleeding doesn't occur?

Have you still not started to bleed? How late are you now?

xwitch · 26/10/2010 22:23

No bleeding at all. 3 weeks late now.

Sometimes with an early m/c your body will simply reabsorb the pregnancy. Happened once to me, had early pregnancy confirmed by scan, but did not lose the pregnancy, it just simply disappeared through reabsorbtion, horrible thinking about it, but it does happen. It was as if I just skipped another month of af, my hcg levels decreased very slowly and eventually when hcg back to zero, had a normal bleed.

Your situation is slightly different, in that you have already had a negative test, but it is possible you will just not bleed until your next af arrives. sorry.

xstitchsparkler · 02/11/2010 10:45

Did you get a call back purple? Hope you are doing ok.

purpletasha · 03/11/2010 08:32

I'm doing ok thank you butno call back gp says he will check my bloods but i will just bleed eventually, he said my body may just absorb everything and i wont get a bleed til next month maybe? but as i dont know my cycle when do i start to worryHmmHave had a ver uncomfortable tummy but have had a section and laperotomy 8 months ago so its prob irritated question is when does my fertility return to normalConfused

xstitchsparkler · 03/11/2010 17:11

purple I would work on a 28 day cycle for those purposes. Better getting checked out the AF coming a few days later than leaving it too long. If you get bad pain don't wait and get it checked out.

My GP has agreed to blood tests but only nurse takes the blood in my surgery and have to wait a few weeks for an appointment.

IMO thats a bit bonkers advice, Blighted ovum is where the baby is conceived, but then never fully develops but you will be left with an empty sac, the sac could remain attached for 3 months! You would not know this unless you have had a scan. Having just experienced the very same my MC eventually started at 12 weeks and i was left with an infection, but the baby itself never formed past cells and was re-absorbed. If i was you i would push for a scan :(

How do you know your neg wasnt a false negative? can get false negs, just not false positives!

FX for you xx

purpletasha · 04/11/2010 08:34

Spoke to the midwife yesterday and she tried to arrange a scan but they wont scan as i have now had a neg test! Gp couldnt see me yesterday so will try again.
Hope you get an app soon xstitch, hugs in the meantime
Firework i have had two neg since:( but am wondering if i have the start of an infection
Am really annoyed that the gp didnt call back on fri did mention to the surgery but they just said it was an oversightAngry

xstitchsparkler · 04/11/2010 09:52
