Hi All,

I had a MC at 9 weeks and then a D&C. That was 2.5 weeks ago. I only bled lightly for about a week, then a week of nothing and normal CM. I now have what seems to be my period...but I did a hpt and its still showing positive. I would have thought this isn't possible? I was delighted when I thought af had arrived as we could start trying again, but now I am totally confused. Had a MC a few years ago too, but can't remember when I got AF again after it. (Haven't had any BD either, so def not pregnant).

All opinions / experiences welcome!!

Hi, Not sure I understand the abbreviations. Are you showing positive on a preganancy test?

Finn77 · 17/10/2010 08:44

Yes, still showing positive on a pregnancy test, 2.5 weeks after the D&C proceedure. I would have expected all the hormones from the preganancy to be gone by now. I was just wondering though, is it possible to have a period with pregnancy hormones still in your system? Thanks for reading, I know it is confusing!

I've no experience with MC, but I think so, yes. Hormones can take ages to leave your system. That's why some people don't have a period for ages after coming off the pill. Took me 6 months to have a period the first time I came off the pill to have dd. It may also explain why your period is so light. I'd wait for a full cycle and if it's still not settled then go back to Drs.

Sorry about your MC.

Hi Finn77,

I would go back to your GP and tell them about the positive pregnancy test. They will (make them if they dont offer!) a blood test to see how much pregnancy hormone is still in your system. This is important because if it is a lot this could indicate retained tissue. If you have this you need a course of antibiotics asap to prevent an infection and you may need further treatment to remove tissue.

Sorry if this sounds scary, I say all this because it happened to me! Hope you are OK, but do get checked out, its not worth taking the risk of having an untreated infection which could affect your future fertility.

sorry pressed send to early!

You may also find this information really useful as a guide to what is "normal" following mc and what isnt.

I'm sorry to hear about your MC. Yes, the same thing happened to me and like Mummyabroad it was due to the fact that there was a small amount of retained tissue which was still receiving a blood supply.

Like you, I didn't know what the reason was that I was still bleeding and cramping. My doctor did a pregnancy test and it came up positive so she referred me to the EPU where I was scanned. When they discovered the reason I was prescribed some strong antibiotics which they hoped would prevent infection and also pass the tissue naturally. I was told to come back 2 weeks later to see if this had been successful. When I returned I had passed some of the tissue but not all so I had an ERPC in the end.

So, best to get to the doctors asap. You will be fine but unfortunately it may well delay your TTC again for a little while.

Hope you're ok. xx

Just wanted to second the vote for seeing your gp or give the hospital a ring directly. You shouldn't still be testing positive this long after the D&C. I've just had an ERPC after a natural MC (and madical management). I was asked to take a pg test 10 days after the MC. I did, it was a teeny tiny positive but they rescanned me and found retained products so I needed the op. I really think you should see someone sooner rather than later.

Good luck, let us know how you get on xx

when i miscarried at 9 weeks last year and nearly 3 weeks after i had lost the baby i was still feeling faint so i took another test and was suprised as it came up posative and quite a strong line 2 it was stronger than the test i took when i was 5 weeks pregnant.
i thought omg im still pregnant but was so upset when they explained to me hormones can remain detectable for upto 4 weeks after.
but the bleeding your having now could be down to some retained products like the other ladies are saying so see your gp. also sorry for your loss x
