Late ovulation

Hi all,

Yesterday I went for a scan to see if a cyst that had been spotted on my left ovary in a previous scan(6 weeks ago) was still there.

The cyst had disappeared and there were no other follicles on my left ovary. When my gynae checked my right ovary she saw a 22mm follicle and said it looked like I was about to ovulate which I thought was about right as I had been having some pains on my right side and EWCM yesterday and the day before. I then reminded her that I was on CD 34 ( I have a history of long cycles, no PCOS and all hormone blood tests have been normal) and she retracted and said that as I was so late in my cycle I might not ovulate after all despite the large follicle.

Of course I came straight home and googled and saw lots of information about how large follicles can just turn into cysts and that just because a 22mm follicle has been observed it does not necessarily mean that ovulation will occur.

I am now trying to counteract google and am wondering if anyone has experience of successfully ovulating so late on in a cycle?

Just had a +ve today - and ovulated day 28... does that count? My cycles are normally 5-6 weeks long

Hi MrsFlick, there are still lots of doctors who think that all women should ovulate on day 14 and if they dont they are "abnormal". Perhaps your doc is one of these. Was she aware that PCOS has been ruled out? When a large follicle is seen no one can tell what is going to happen next, it could turn into a cyst or you could ovulate. Based on the other factors you mentioned ovulation actually seems more likely.

(ov pains, previous long cycle history, normal hormone tests) Do you use OPKs and take temperatures? This (combined) might put your mind at rest that you are ovulating. You are well beyond the stage of using OPKs and temp charting; neither method is infact helpful if you have long cycles.

What tests have you had done to date and when were these done?. Did you for instance have LH/FSH hormone tests done and at what point in the cycle?. Have they ruled out problems with your thyroid gland?.

I would suggest you also now seek a second opinion particularly if you have no diagnosis of the underlying problem.

Thanks mummyabroad My doctor is aware the PCOS has been ruled out as she was the one who did the scan and ran the blood tests. I used to temperature chart but I found that I got obsessed and have tried to take a more chilled out approach in the last few months

atillaI'm not sure if you were asking me those questions so I will reply anyway!

I have had cycle day 2 tests for LH (2.2) FSH (4) Prolactin (7.6). I was also tested for the following but cannot remember the actual figures other than that they are in the 'normal' range- E2, T4, TSH and DHEA so problems with the thyroid gland have also been ruled out.
