5 weeks and very low folate levels - abnormality inevitable?

Hi
After 4 mcs I had a battery of blood tests, and the MTHFR result shows I am homozygous ie very very low folate level. Dr has put me on high folic acid(5mg). Thats all fine but I am already 5 weeks pregnant and am terrified that with such low folate levels at such a crucial time I am already at very high risk of having a baby with a problem such as DS or spinabifida. Has anyone else experienced this and can give me any comfort?

I dont have any experience of this, but my heart goes out to you. You must be out of your mind with worry. Hope things go well..

Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy. I have to say that I have no firm knowledge on this. But now that you're on the folic acid, at only 5 weeks surely that'll be ok. Is 5 weeks the "official" date - as in from your last period? Cos if so, the baby will only have been conceived 3 weeks ago and acually implanted 1 week ago and so barely taken anything from your blood supply yet. And now you're supplementing. But talk to your consultant to get proper advice. All the best to you.
