Hi there,
I wondered if anybody could advise us as to whether using a water based lubricant (not spermicidal) in any way inhibits conception?

We find we...er... cough... enjoy sex more using a little bit of lubricant but then wondered if we are lessening our chances by using it or not.

thanks

Hi,

Sorry but normal lubricants our NOT good for sperm. studies with sperm in test tubes have shown that lubricants can do damage to DNA structure and motility.

Oil based ones are no good either because the sperm get trapped in the oil and cant swim out.

There are two brands of lubricants especially for TTCers Preseed and Conceive plus you can find them on Amazon. They are more expensive but have been proven not to harm sperm.

on a less scientific note:
I Cant vouch for Conceive plus because I havent tried it but Preseed goes a bit nasty and sticky after 5 mins contact with the air. Yik.Sad

Have tried Pre-Seed and agree with MummyAbroad in that I wasn't a major fan of Pre-Seed. I haven't tried Conceive, however.

There is a brand new one on the market too called Yes Baby, but again I don't know if it's any good or whether it does what it's meant to do.

I've used concieve plus this month, don't know if its worked yet though! Bought it in boots. It's not bad but comes out of the tube pretty quick.

harassedinherpants · 08/10/2010 09:58

I've got some Preseed and it's fine.

What are you doing with it in the air for 5 mins plus?!! Wink. I do quite like the applicators they give you too.

MummyAbroad · 08/10/2010 16:10

I didnt use the applicators, I didnt really buy into the idea the Preseed HELPS you get pregnant (if you believe this, you are supposed to use applicators to help get the lubricant up near your cervix)

Re: stickyness, if you do get it over the outside of your vagina or on your legs or whatever it goes all sticky very quickly. I guess its getting an airing as we're still trying to make an effort to keep sex fun and not just for making a baby - hope that explains it well enough without going into too much detail IYSWIM...

Right that is TMI for today Blush

good luck to everyone!

conceive plus states on the box it should just be used like a normal lube if that's any help. it does go a little sticky after a while but its still fun!

MummyAbroad · 08/10/2010 21:36

mumblecrumble - dont panic, its not 100% wasted. Its no where near damaging enough to be used effectively as a contraceptive (but it does lower your chances) and at least you had funGrin
