Really, really, really stupid question about coming off the pill. Feel free to laugh and point.

I am really about asking this- my excuse is I have been on the pill for 14 years (since I was 14) and I can't remember what my periods were like before that, apart from being very painful, which was why I went on the pill.

Anyway, I took my last pill on Friday, and started my period Tuesday. My question is (I know, its so stupid), how will the period know when to stop? I ask this because when i have had 'periods' whilst taking the pill, they have only stopped because I started taking the pill again, whereas this time I won't be taking another pill to stop it,if thats makes sense.

i am sure I am being really silly but I just want to check it isn't going to carry on for ages!

When you've had periods while on the pill they didn't stop because you took the pill again, they stopped because the dead tissue had left your body. It will be the same without the pill.

Hi buggerlugs, its funny you should ask that as I have had a lot of tummy upsets/diarrohea the last few days BUT this could easily be explained by the fact that we were on holiday in Morocco when I stopped taking the pill so I presumed it was just that. I'll do the dates so you can see if it matches with your symptoms:

Fri 1st october- on holiday,stop taking pill
Tuesday 5 oct- back from holiday, period arrives.
Monday 11 oct- period ends.

I would say I had tummy upsets from 2nd October til around Thursday 7 oct.

Buggerlugs- you mentionned you had had a breakthrough bleed and a proper period, if i have read your post right? How long did you have between the BTB and the proper period?
