Hi Ladies,
I need you advice please!
I am TTC after M/c in April. I am taking tons of vitamins. I ran out of my normal multi vits so bought some different ones, i didn't realise that they had 400mg Folic Acid in them so i was taking additional Folic Acid too Now i am worried that i have recently been taking too much.
What happens if you do, is it really bad to take too much? Are there any side effects?
What is the best vits to take?
Thank you in advance x

may produce yellow urine?!?

Lottielou, you should stick to pregnacare type vits while TTC to be on the safe side, the dangerous one to overdose on would be vit A nor should you take too much iron.

I wouldn't worry about the folic acid at all, I don't think you can overdose. Just before I started TTC I went to Goa with dp and we had to take two different anti-malarials. I was told (by MASTA - the travel doctors) to supplement with something like 5g (not mg!) of folic acid because they deplete you so much. (But that it was ok to TTC although I wouldn't have risked it while taking the anti-malarials). It's difficult to get that dosage without prescription so I was taking about 12 a day for six weeks! The pharmacist said it would be fine. In fact I don't think your body can store B vits?

BTW B vits generally (which I took to deter the mossies - didn't work tho!) turn your wee bright yellow....

A really great time thanks, thoroughly recommend it! I'm 23 weeks pregnant now. I hope it's your turn soon!

Taking too much folic acid can interfere with zinc absorption. I have a weird feeling it can irritate the lining of the intestines, too (I am talking megadoses here, though).

Really? I didn't know about the zinc thing but I was taking quite large doses (about 5mg - maybe 12 ordinary tablets for 6 weeks) on the advice of travel doctors who said it was fine to do so and what they recommended for pregnant women taking that particular anti-malarial who absolutely had to travel to risky areas (still better than getting malaria and no greater risk of any problems). Myself, I wouldn't have risked ttc whilst taking them. I waited a month or so after I stopped to be on the safe side.

I have a guest sleeping in my library room, but that's what my nutrition book says, that very high doses of folic acid can interfere with zinc absorption. Lots of things interfere with zinc absorption, mind.
