LH : FSH ratio clarity

My results were confusing me a while back. I had LH of 8.9 and FSH of 5.2.

I've just seen a consultant and asked specifically about the fact it is not in a ratio of 1:1 which previous MN posts here say it should be.

His reply was that my results seemed fairly typical for someone my age (39), and he also said that if the FSH was higher, he'd be more concerned because that can be a sign of PCOS.

In my case, its the LH which is higher, and he said this surges at different levels normally, so not something he was worried about.

Thought I'd post it in case anyone else has similar questions that I had.

I have PCOS and my LH level was consistently higher than that of FSH throughout. I was always led to understand that if the LH level is higher than that of FSH then PCOS could well be an issue.

These results can look okay if only looked at separately so this is why comparison is also needed. Also blood tests should be repeated along with internal ultrasound scans to assess the state of the ovaries.

When were your blood tests taken? If it was a CD2 or CD3 test, the ratio does look out of kilter. And an LH level consistently higher than FSH does suggest PCO - but, as Attila said, you need further tests to determine PCOS.
