I think it happened to me. I became pregnant and it was never found (had x rays after the birth). Not very reliable as a contaceptive for me either, obviously.

MollysChambers · 19/08/2010 21:07

Oh blimey. Hope that's not common. Shock Going by your name though OP it's not a disaster though. Grin

abbierhodes · 19/08/2010 21:11

That's scary! Shock

broodywantcoilout · 19/08/2010 21:44

wow! i would have thought you could feel it come out or would notice it-in loo etc. found that quite suprising!! perhaps not as reliable as it seems then!

Must be very rare though as it is considered more effective than female sterilisation.

emptyshell · 20/08/2010 06:41

Mine came half-out to the point where you could feel it during sex (on both sides) and it was dangling semi-wild and free. Almost fell out of its own volition when I had to get it removed to treat a cervical erosion and the hospital doc's comment was he didn't know how it was still hanging in there.

Think the doc had rushed fitting it in his desperation to get to the pub for lunchtime though.

imahappycamper · 20/08/2010 09:36

I don't think it is that rare. One midwife joked that she had seen babies come out with the coil in their hands!

broodywantcoilout · 20/08/2010 16:59

hahaha!!!
i cant believe how many experiences of this i'm reading here!!! when u get it fitted they make out that this is v.rare (and that ud notice 2)!!

OMG! Maybe I ought to do a PT as being feeling faint and sick and generally odd as well as weight gain.

broodywantcoilout · 20/08/2010 17:05

i had a few pregnancy symptoms a few weeks back (sore boobs, feeling sick etc), took 2 tests (different days), both bfn and since then have had an almost constant flow of periods/spotting so i'm fine (dont know if that makes u feel any better)
but,
reading what other ppl have put
may b a good idea?
let us know how it goes if u do take 1!!!
have also read that pregnancy symptoms seem 2 b a side effect of having mirena-they dont tell u that when u get 1!!!

You are meant to check you can feel the coil strings after each period to check it's still there because they can self-expel, but it's rare for them to do so. More usually they've migrated upwards, hence the need for the scan.

And yes, is more reliable than female sterilisation.

My friend has had two fall out!

broodywantcoilout · 20/08/2010 19:07

2?! her body certainly doesnt appera to like them then!!
i've heard dr's r supposed 2 show u how 2 check for the strings. had myn fitted 2 1/2 years ago, she checked them a couple of months later then after another year but that was it-she didnt mention me ckecking them or anything.
am just about to check out that link, thanks

Well did a test and Im not pregnant-thank god! Dont know whats with really faint though!

Can feel the thread now but was a bit worry with serious cramping the other night and no period for ages......

broodywantcoilout · 30/08/2010 19:46

perhaps might be speaking to a dr? good luck!
had my scan(s)-tummy scan couldnt find it, internal scan couldnt find it, so i emptied my bladder, scan still couldnt find it, went to the loo again and still couldnt find it! so had an x-ray (after the sonogropher had kept asking me if there was any chance i could be pregnant-surely she would have noticed something if i was?!?!) and was told tehy think they can c it in my pelvis. got to wait a few days now to see what happens next :-(

i still cant believe i, and i believe many other ppl werent warned theres a chance of it perforating your uterus, or even how to check for strings!!

I’ve just come home from hospital following an endometrial ablation.- (had the coil fitted in December but had made no difference to my v heavy periods so it was to be removed during this procedure ). When the doctor came to my room he asked me “what happened to your coil”. Apparently it wasn’t there ! I have know idea why and he suggested it has came away at some point during the past few months due to v heavy bleeding and clotting. I’m not particularly concerned but wondered if this has happened to anyone else ? Luckily it wasn’t needed for contraception 😊
