Have I tested too early?

Hi,

DH and I have been TTC for 3 months now. My period was due on Friday and still hasn't arrived yet so just did a test (cheapy one) and it was BFN. I was so sure I was PG as I'm regular as clockwork and have never missed a period or had a late period more than a day. Have I tested too early and do you think theres still a chance I could be PG? Sorry to ramble on. I was so sure I was PG and getting very excited. Feel I've had the wind taken out of my sails.

Always test more than once, always test first thing in the morning, and if you can, wait until your period is at least five days late. I know it's difficult if you want to know! I tested midday when I was two or three days late, it was negative, then tested positive three days later (am now six months PG). So, no idea if you are or not, but if you're more precise with testing, then you'll know either way. Also, have you tried conception indicators? Can get sticks you pee on from Boots and other places, similar to PG tests but to tell you when you're ovulating, so you can plan sex for those times. HTH.

Oh thanks so much for your reply. I feel a bit stupid but I'm new to all this. I only bought 2 tests. I did the first this morning but it was invalid. Then the second which was negative at lunch time. I haven't tried the conception indicators as we haven't been trying for very long but my last ovulation dates fell right in the middle of our two week holiday so we did a lot of trying lol. I'm resisting the urge to run down to the chemist and buy a first response. I think I will wait a few more days. Thanks again and congratulations!

You're welcome. It's funny, it's the most natural thing in the world etc, etc, but really, there can be a lot more to it! And if you're not, then enjoy the trying Wink

I dont blame you for testing after period being three/four days late but I guess its just a very annoying waiting game, I'd wait another two/three days and test again if still no AF... you could get some poundshop cheapy tests but it might make you a bit stressy peeing on sticks every day for the next few days and if anything like me get a bit sad with all the BFNs if its not to be.

I'm pretty sure with my first pregnancy I waited about the same timeframe (3days late) and got my BFP, but I'm sure there are just as many people who got BFNs after three days who went on to get BFPs.

Thank you both for all your advice. I feel much better now. I will try and relax over the next 2 - 3 days and test again at the end of the week. I'm bursting to tell DH that I'm late but don't want to get his hopes up.

I didn't get my BFP until my period was a week late. I am usually regular, but not sure if I ovulated late this cycle.

I found Asda tests pretty good. They are quite sensitive and I never found I got an evap on them. (I have used a LOT of them... Blush )

beckie90 · 17/08/2010 10:39

i got mine 4 days early and then i did a cheapy test at 3 days, it wasnt a sensative test it was just one from poundland and still came posative, thinking maybe im further than i think.
but last time didnt get a bfp till i was 2/3 days late, so good luck ANNIESTAR. a late period is a good sign though spesh when your normally regular. keep us posted :)

My period came last night rather painfully :( Don't understand it as like I said I'm always very regular. Trying not to feel too down as we've only been trying 3 months but I was really upset last night as I'd convinced myself I was PG. A reminder not to let my imagination run wild next time. Thought it was too good to be true. I'm glad I didn't tell DH. Thank you all so much for your advice. I can't talk to anyone about it as we didn't want to tell anyone that we're trying for a baby so I really appreciate all your replies. Comtessa - I've just ordered some of the conception indicators from boots.com as I'm now totally confused as to when I'll be ovulating next. Thanks again everyone x x

Sorry to hear that anniestar. Something to watch out for as well is what's known as a chemical pregnancy. Sometimes you can have a positive test, followed by all negative tests. This can be because conception did take place, but wasn't viable, and you continue your cycle as usual, resulting in your period. This happened to me once.

So, even if you get a positive, test again a day or two later, and a day or two after that too, just to make sure before ordering the (small) glass of champagne.
Wishing you all the best.

aawwww anniestar!!
You will be upset especially like you say you were convinced you were our bodies play awful tricks on us. Its awful all the waiting and wondering isnt it.
Are you using ovulation sticks?? I used them the first month and got pregnant straight away. Your time will come hun just enjoy the practise ha ha.
Are your periods very regular??

anniestar · 18/08/2010 16:59

Thank you Comtessa. I've never heard of a chemical pregnancy before. Thanks Shellmc. Yes, the waiting is awful but hopefully it will all be worth it. I ordered some ovulation sticks this morning on Comtessa's advice. Because my period was so late I'm not sure when I will ovulate next. Yes, my periods are very regular. My best friend thinks I'm odd as I'm regular as clockwork (sometimes a day early, sometimes day late but usually spot on) and rarely get period pains just the odd twinge though I was in pain yesterday morning when I first came on but nothing at all now. Thank you both for your kind words and best wishes x x

The ovulation sticks are great, They usually say around day 14 after ya period is when ya normally ovulate depending how long ya cycle is. I ovulated on day 15 so everybody is different the way to do it as i was recommended by a friend from past experience, was to use one around 13-16 days after ya period you can usually tell if your near ovulation with them as a line appears if you do one and the line is faint this will show your ready to ovulate you should do one the day after and as you see the line get darker this will show that you have ovulated.
What i did was once i had a line appear we done it straight away and the day after and day after that 2!! OHHH the joys :-)
My line was the darkest on day 15 after my period. Just over 4 weeks later i got my BFP!!!
I do recommend these and i wish you all the luck in the world xx

anniestar · 18/08/2010 19:37

Thank you Shellmc. I will do that this month. I've ordered the first response pack which contains 20 tests I think. I must be hormonal cos your post just made me cry. The advice on here has made me feel so much better. Thank you everyone x x

Also - have you come off the pill very recently? I was on the mini-pill and I had terrible ovarian pains when I came off it, but I suspect that was just my body adjusting to the different level of hormones and preparing to get to work! All the best anniestar xx

shellmc · 19/08/2010 19:46

Awwwwww anniestar you will be hormonal hun its all baffling and you get a mix of excitment-upset and scared all at once.
I doo hope you have success real soon xx
Post and let us know how ya get on xx
