Sorry to be so dim but I am not really familiar with all the ins and outs of this.
I took early tests at 4dpo, (silly!) and 6dpo - then not until 12 dpo.

Looking back at the first two, the 6dpo now has a line. The 4dpo didn't, and the 12dpo definitely doesn't, and anyway I started my period that night.

So I'm wondering if this means I was pg for a short while, maybe - is it called a 'chemical pregnancy' or something? Can anyone explain what might be going on? I had some spotting at 4dpo so possibly early implantation iyswim> then to be lost.

A line is only reliable if it appears within five mins of taking the test. So when you say the 6 dpo test "now" has a line, that means nothing if it didn't have a line straight after you peed on it. Did it? If nit it's probably an evaporation line.

You can't 'read' a result on a test after a few hours iirc, so if you are looking back now it wil mean nothing.
I kept my tests from dd1 and 2 and dd1's still has a line, dd2's doesn't, and she is sitting on my lap!

Flight I know how tempting it is but I really wouldn't test until 14 days PO. Tests are rarely accurate until then.

At 6 dpo the embryo wouldn't be implanting so I don't see how it can give any detectable rise in hormones.

And never look at a test outside of the time limit - the test strips due change colour with time.

Thankyou for all the replies...Belgo, I know, I was being irrational testing sooner...hard to explain and it makes no sense! But there are galleries of these things online and some are positive at 6dpo iyswim so I wasn't sure.

The line looks pink to me but no, there was nothing there initially.

The thing that is confusing me is, if it's just an evap, why isn't there one on the other tests as well?

Thanks for the good luck too, we're not trying yet but had a bit of a mishap. We'll probably wait a bit longer before we actually make an effort
