please please help! urgent advice needed

Here's the problem i have been on the pill for about two months. and on my pack recently i forgot to take the second last one so just took the last one the following day so i ende my pills last friday. i recently got an infection and have been on antibiotics Since the monday. me and my partner have been having sex but i didn't realise antibi can effect your pill. im still on them and due back on my pill tomorrow. do you think i could have got pregnant..? any advice appreciated x

yes you could be also if you missed 1 pill in the last week that leaves u at risk of gettin pregnant 2, if that happens your supposed to carry on taking the pill and not stop for the week break. you can get some antibiotics that dont affect the pill but some do it should tell you on the leaflet you got with the antibiotics.

Yes, you could have got pregnant. Missing one pill can allow an egg to be released (in fact, many contraceptive pills work by stopping the 'cycle' at just the stage where the egg is 'ripe' but not yet released, which means that the egg is released if you forget your pill, even for one day. I know several people who have conceived after a single missed pill.

Some antibiotics can also affect how well the pill works. I think you should go to your GP or family planning clinic. If you really don't want to get pg, maybe the implant would be a better choice for you - you can't forget it and it isn't affected by tummy upsets, antibiotics etc.

To be honest i wouldn't mind being pregnant we do want more children. just be a bit sooner than planned.!

I'd give the next pack of pills a miss then, use some other contraception instead for a few weeks, then do a test.

Do you think i should not take it in case i an pregnant? and just use condoms. could i still be pregnant even though i still got my period this week? although it was heavier than normal. x

Ah, a period (especially a heavy one) would indicate that you're NOT pregnant. If you have any other symptoms, I'd say take a test, otherwise I'd assume you're not pregnant.

Usually, the first symptom if someone has got pregnant while on the pill is no bleeding in the 'week off'. The bleeding you have when you take a break from the pill isn't a normal period, it's what is called a 'withdrawal bleed'. Normally, the pill 'tricks' your body into thinking it is pregnant by supplying it with small amounts of hormones, and when you stop taking the pill for a week, and these levels drop, you have the bleed. If you WERE pregnant, the real pregnancy hormones would prevent you from bleeding during this break from the pill.

As an interesting aside, there is no medical reason for the 'break' in the pill. When the pill was being designed, the (presumably male) doctors thought that women would prefer to feel like they were having a 'normal' cycle while they were taking the pill!

Ah ok i think though if i were to fall pregnant it would have been through this week as this is when we have been having sex whilst i've been on antibiotics so can you still fall pregnant on your period? i know its bit gross having sex throug your period but he dosnt mind and we are comfortable enough with it and each other. so i suppose i am now wondering if i could have fallen pregnant this week? bein that i missed the second last pill and the antibiotics to go with it.

Hmmmm. Tricky.

It's unlikely but not impossible to get PG when having your 'period', but I don't think the situation is the same if it's a withdrawal bleed from the pill. If you missed the pill or took the antibiotics within about a week of having the sex, then I think you'd have a chance of getting pregnant, as the egg could have been released.

I think maybe in your shoes I would play it safe, skip the pills and wait a month to test just in case.

I'm not a nedical doctor, btw, but a biologist with a special interest in reproductive science!

i had the bleed still while i was on the pill and fell pregnant so did my friend, the doctor said it was common if you were on the pill and had the bleed as it was only a withdrawel bleed.
and yes glasgow mandy, i had a mc last year and i concieved that baby while i was on my period, if you think u could be just stop the pill and use condoms until you find out

ok i took a test yestaerday and there was a very faint line!! took another toest this afternoon and it was negative, i took the first one yesterday in the morning though
