Has anyone used an IUD with a retroverted uterus?

Sorry to ask in Conception, couldn't think where else!

I was thinking of getting an IUD but have seen some comments on other websites about the problems doctors can have inserting them if you have a retroverted or tilted uterus.

I found an article suggesting it shouldn't make any difference, but am still a bit worried.

If you have experience of this I would be grateful to hear it - thankyou

Btw I am not even certain it is retroverted any more - I have had two children and I seem to remember it went forwards after ds1, or something...? But might have gone back again

I have. It hurt a bit having it put in, but only like bad period cramps. The dr didn't seem to find it difficult to do. Find someone who has fitted a lot of them - retro uteri are pretty common (1/5 I think) so they should have had some practice

Oh thankyou,

that is very reassuring. I had read about people having their uterus perforated etc etc.

I really hope they are experienced where I am going.

hiya

mine tilts backwards and i had it done, i did get cramps now and again but that could have been anything, my mum has a backwards tilting 1 too and shes had the iud for years.
i read about perforating too, but try not to worry im sure u will be fine

Ask them how many they have done. If not experienced, find somewhere else. V unlikely to perforate if they know what they're doing.

Thankyou very much. I have an appt tomorrow with the clinic and she sounded very confident, apparently they usually fit them on a Thursday, so she clearly has experience.

She did say though that her assistant is off this week, so it will depend on whether she can find someone to help her. If she can't we will just do the paperwork and I will have to travel elsewhere to have it done on Wednesday instead.

Thanks for your help and advice.

yep good to hear. im sure your docter has plenty of expiereince and you will be fine

Thanks very much Beckie, you are very nice!

I am a bit worried now because (TMI) yesterday I had some light brown CM. Nothing before or since, and I am not sure what to do.
The reason I was going to have the IUD was as emergency contraception but I understand it doesn't work if you are already pregnant, and I'm afraid in case this was some kind of implantation sign. I did have the same thing when I was last pregnant but that was more like 7 days after ovulation, and this was only 4 or 5 days. So maybe something else as is a bit soon to have implantation.

I think I will go and talk to the doctor anyway with a list of dates and see what she says, it might be unrelated but I will tell her in case it is relevant.

just remember though, it doesnt always have to be around the middle of the month you can become pregnant, i have 1 little boy and he was concieved 2 days before my due period and last year i had a mc and that worked out i got pregnant at the end of my period. shows out body can do some strange things, so maybe if you have caught on earlier than you think, then you would get implantation bleeding earlier 2. if you get what i am saying lol.

right i would suggest either going to your doctors, or waiting untill you can take a test but obviously use contraception incase your not pregnant, because its not advised to have the coil if you are pregnant.

maybe it might be implantation or maybe its just one of these things that sometimes we cant explain.

let me know

Possiblythisishappening · 27/07/2010 11:10

Thanks Beckie, it's interesting that you have managed to become pg at some unusual times. It just goes to show how random it is, doesn't it - I'm really sorry to hear about your mc though

I just saw the really nice family planning lady, and she was really sensible, and went over my chart with me several times while we figured out what to do.

She seemed to focus on the fact we had sex the week before as well, which imo was much less risky but she said it could be that I had conceived then because it was about 5 days before ovulation. So she reckoned we were right on the cusp of whether an IUD would work or not, and if it didn't, I'd have a lot of complications - so all in all we have gone with the wait and see approach.

BUT she did manage to fit me with a diaphragm which is what I was intending to use before all this happened. So it wasn't a wasted trip. Thankyou for all your help and support...just got to do the 10 day wait now, and keep everything crossed.

i know i guess im kind of weird haha, its happend to a few people i know though it just shows you dont have to be ovulating to get pregnant. and its ok.

what would you do if you were pg

the family planning clinics are very polite and friendly and understanding which is good
