Worried: Have I discovered a medical problem I didn;t know I had?

AF has not arrived today when she should have, so I decided to test. I got a BFP - or thought I did - until I later realised that I'd grabbed an OPK and not an HPT! The positive result was for an 'LH' surge and not a BFP.

Why am I getting positive LH surges on the day AF is due?

I know everyone says these sticks are unreliable ... but are they that unreliable?

I'm worried. What does it mean to have high LH levels at the end of your cycle?

Am sure someone else will reply soon but I have a feeling I've read about people using OPKs as pregnancy tests before (not sure exactly how) - so maybe try a pregnancy test before worrying?

Best of luck!

Yes you can get a BFP on an OPK. Look at the pee on a stick website.

hCG, LH and FSH are all similar hormones. The test kits can pick up LH or hCG. Sounds like your BFP was just that!!

Chocciechip everything crossed for you x

Thanks ladies. Unfortunately, I am definitely NOT pregnant: I am spotting, my temps are dropping, and I've had a BFN on a first response ultra early HPT at 15 DPO. So an LH surge now, at this stage in my cycle, is really worrying me .

choccie i have definitely heard that you can get a positive on an OPK if you have pregnancy hormones but you cannot do it the other way round and get a positive on a pregnancy test with LH.

I hate to suggest it but could it have been a chemical pregnancy eg. you started the process of getting preg (hence the positive) and then it didn't get going so now you're getting a neg.

Alternatively, i'm trying to remember if you have erratic cycles. If you do - could this be ovulation time. Sometimes after a positive on an OPK you can get a temp drop and spotting at time of ovulation. Followed by the temp increase.

Could you be ovulating?? I know you're charting so it seems unlikely you could Ovulate without knowing it was coming.

Sorry, if neither of these suggestions applies (I don't wish to upset you at all.) I don't know of any conditions that give you an LH surge before AF.

When I got preg in May I did try peeing on an OPK to see if I got a line and i did get a faint one.

hippy You haven't upset me at all. I was concerned it might be a chemical pregnanacy too, but I think it very unlikely. I did do some early tests on CD13, 14 and 15 (using sensitive HPTs) and they all came back negative. But more than that, I get very significant symptoms when I am pregnant and there was nothing like that in this cycle.

As for the ovulation aspect ... my cycles are regular and I've poured over my chart again and there is absolutly no sign of possible ovulation around CD15. I am confused about when I ovulated (and it shows that I did), but I don't think it would impact on the end of the cycle ... do you?

I just got my LH test results back and they are only just with the range of normal, so I'm now wondering if there is something up. I've posted another thread in this forum asking for help with interpreting all the results, so I hope someone will come along and help.

FWIW, the LH component was as follows:

LH U/L 2.0 - 9.0
My result: 8.9

Glad I didn't upset you - I have been worrying myself that I shouldn't have mentioned it.

I hope someone is able to give you some useful info choccie. Speak soon. xx

I had a +ve OPK on CD27 of a 27-day cycle back in January. I had just started temping at the time so I wasn't sure whether I had ovulated, although I suspect I had as my anovulatory cycles were either very long or very short, and this one seemed normal.

At the time I posted on here and didn't get much joy as to an explanation, but looking back, and now armed with the knowledge that my next cycle was a very strange 17-day one, I wonder whether it was a chemical pregnancy. So, I kind of agree with hippy in that maybe yours has been a failed implantation
