Never mind ULEZ, remember ban on sale of new petrol/diesel cars is only 7 years away

And we're only slightly ahead of EU as a whole (2035), but several other EU countries are going with 2030 and some (eg Austria) are earlier (in 2027)

Not just Europe either

So if you don't want to be caught out at 11th hour, remember now that this is coming!

Why would that catch anyone out? It’s only new cars, not a sudden to ban on a petrol or diesel car…

DoeRayMe · 28/07/2023 20:49

Only new registered car, will make no difference to existing cars.

justgettingthroughtheday · 28/07/2023 20:51

There is absolutely zero chance that petrol and diesel cars will stop being sold in 2030. They will push it back and then push it back.

Electric vehicles are not going to work for a significant proportion of the population with the current setup.

sanityisamyth · 28/07/2023 20:51

Only if you want to buy a new car. They're not going to suddenly turn up with a tow truck to remove fossil fuel cars from every driveway in the country.

VikingVolva · 28/07/2023 20:55

It has the potential to catch out those who replace their car only rarely, and who might want plan ahead if they have specific reasons for a specific type of car

OF COURSE I know it's new cars only, that's why I used the word "new" in the thread title. And this step may well have much further reaching consequences than ULEZ in terms of second hand car market. If you can't afford to buy new, you may want to consider bringing forward a second-hand ICE purchase rather than waiting until second-hand is the only option and prices increase adjust accordingly. It's really not that far away now

I don't think anyone would think that

Based on how many electric car fires there's been, it's going to be a long time before I buy electric

So you might want to bear the date in mind, and plan when you buy cars in future (to get best availability)

My diesel car is 12 years old. Should I sell and replace asap?

Only you can decide that.

In general it's best to keep cars for as long as possible (from the climate change pov) but that's not necessarily true for the sorts of emissions that cause lung damage (ULEZ rationale).

How long would you usually keep a car on the road for?

Is your current car still running well?

OP posts:
bellac11 · 28/07/2023 21:31

Theres already a long thread about this somewhere

Its incredibly unlikely to run to timescales

AvengedQuince · 28/07/2023 21:33

What is an ICE car?
This is just going to hit the poor by driving up second hand prices 😔 . People with be paying high repair bills just to keep their cars on the road, long past when they would normally have upgraded to a new second hand car. It's shit.

AvengedQuince · 28/07/2023 21:35

How long would you usually keep a car on the road for?
Until the repair cost at MOT is higher than the value of the car.

GlacindaTheTroll · 28/07/2023 21:36

ICE = Internal Combustion Engine (ie petrol or diesel)

Will new hybrids still be allowed?

How many have there been compared to non electric cars?

Dox9 · 28/07/2023 21:53

I am looking forward to owning an electric just not the expense of buying it! I will be keeping my current small petrol car until it dies though as that's the most environmentally sound option. I did the maths and with the type of car I drive and the amount of driving I do, I would need to drive an electric car for 10 years to get to a point where emissions caused by manufacturing a new electric car are offset by the emissions saved from using an electric over petrol. It was quite eye opening. We need to use our existing cars as long as possible. The last thing the planet needs is scrapping driveable petrol cars and replacing them with new ones, even if they are electric.

Same here, I run mine into the ground

AvengedQuince · 28/07/2023 22:19

I actually paid a bit more than what my last car was worth to fix it up for a family member as at least we know the history of the car.

TheNineNine · 28/07/2023 22:24

Remember when all of those Zafiras were going on fire! It was when my dc were small and it seemed like everyone I know had one. Three times they were recalled.

HarrietSchulenberg · 28/07/2023 22:38

It's not going to happen until electric cars last longer than the current 5 years or so, the batteries charge faster, AND the infrastructure is available to support electric vehicles. At the moment the "petrol and diesel are going" message is driving (Wink) a lovely trade in new motors but conveniently ignoring the second hand market which, after all, is much more sustainable than buying new anyway.

xyz111 · 28/07/2023 22:41

@Soontobe60 don't know the exact figures (I'm sure they're out there with a Google search). But when you work in emergency services and see the damage electric vehicles and lithium batteries do when they catch light, I'd need a lot more safety measures first.

I have a Zafria and it didn't really worry me. It's not a consideration in not wanting a EV. They just don't have the range atm. The main consideration for me with a car is it doing what I need it too.

Must of not seen recent news that Rahul is considering moving that 2030 date and it can't be met

VikingVolva · 30/07/2023 18:48

There's just been a piece on the BBC evening news about this, and the possibility that making an extension to the 2030 date will be an election issue

Rahul...weird typo...meant Rishi
