Climate Change

20-minute neighbourhood

Hi mum’s!
i wanted to share something with you. Yesterday someone dropped a leaflet on my door mentioning the plans to get my council under the 20-minute neighbourhood.

This means cars (including electric) will be allowed to go outside a 20 minute perimeter, for a number of times (per Year?)

Families I know (mine included) cannot fit in that pattern, and there is no public transportation that we can rely on. Basically transportation is being capped in the name of the “climate”, however there are other ways to really push for a better climate, including stopping using plastics. Ban them. Support innovation for renewable resources, etc.

It feels a new form of control some councils pledged to follow. This will increase the amount of power they already have. I don’t believe that’s ok, no one should have that much power over people.

This is already in plans / happening in a couple of towns:

https://www.itv.com/news/2023-02-20/what-is-a-15-minute-city-and-why-is-the-idea-so-controversial

Is this happening in your town? Hopefully not. I don’t believe omni powers are democratic.

I live in a fully urban area but it is still 20 mins walk to my closest shop and 30 mins walk to most services. I would rather like to see more shops scattered around / amongst the housing but I just can’t imagine that occurring. It would also be good if buses ran on more streets so I didn’t have to add 45mins to my bus journey each time.

If these changes occurred I would definitely be more likely to not get in my car (almost) every time I left the house - it would happen naturally, I wouldn’t need to be forced by fines or restrictions.

It's amazing how many people are losing their shit over a concept that is pretty much how their parents and grandparents lived when they were growing up

So your argument it that this is fine because it takes us back to a lifestyle that people had in the mid 20th century? Call me a fruit loop but I prefer the life that I have now. Freedom of choice and not being financially penalised for using that choice.

If you can provide the piece of evidence that shows you won't have freedom of choice or be penalised for wanting that freedom 👍🏻

LaurieFairyCake · 12/06/2023 15:04

You've got a mobility car - so you're disabled and it won't apply to you ? Confused

Daftasabroom · 14/06/2023 15:46

@WorkinMumsince4ever in what way do plastics emit more CO2 than combustion engines?

(They don't BTW)

They have already pledged for this. Is this the mandate provided by the people who voted for that council? I think not. This decision that impacts the whole community should be democratic. Saying otherwise is corrupting the system.
That’s what makes me furious.

You know we've just had local council elections? Or does the concept of democracy only apply to things that you think are a good idea?

RudsyFarmer · 11/06/2023 12:18

People are losing their shit over the idea because it will curtail their freedoms. Lockdown was another one of those ideas where we were supposedly losing our freedom to protect vulnerable people (thinking of society first) and it was first to be entirely pointless.

in a world where countries such as India and China keep pumping out fossil fuels with no intention of stopping, the fact that Maureen in Oxford won’t be allowed to drive her Fiat outside of a certain perimeter if she exceeds her limit, is going to make absolutely fuck all difference to anything.

Good grief you are ignorant. The average Indian has 1/3 the carbon footprint of Auntie Maureen. Chine has declared to be net zero by 2060. Your emissions are likely higher than the average Chinese.

Daftasabroom · 14/06/2023 18:13

@WorkinMumsince4ever

did you take part in the public consultancy for the local plan recently updated by your local council? I doubt it?

Did you run for a seat at the recent democratically held local council elections? I doubt it.

Have you even read your local plan? I doubt it.

Have you ever been to a public council meeting? I doubt it.

You also seem oblivious to the recent democratic council elections. Did you vote?

I’d love you to be right. Any links to back this up?

@RudsyFarmer

Per Capita emissions
More per capita emissions
More per capita emissions

Those are national scope 1 emissions divided by population size. However when we look at consumption based emissions it changes somewhat as many of the goods and services we use originate outside of our national boundaries.

Consumption based emissions
IPCC inventory rules

China net zero pledge Other links included very detailed sectorial targets, so hard to digest quickly.

The idea is you won't need or want to drive out of your neighbourhood all the time - identify what needs to change to make that possible

But to be honest if taking away everyone's car keys today would halt climate change I would find myself morally obliged to support the idea

Don't worry I'd let you have them back when you show you have grown up enough.

You need to show you can think beyond ME NOW like a small child

Because having a car you drive whenever and wherever you want won't save you

Climate change is going to change your life and could make it much worse - you can either choose smaller easier changes now or have much nastier changes foisted on you

We don't all work from home or make money off daddy's portfolio.

And what has that got to do with it?

kelsaycobbles · 08/08/2023 18:22

@fullbloom87

Correct - not everyone lives off daddy's portfolio or works from home

Are you suggesting that characterise me?
Bless your socks
