Hi all,
We are looking at relocating from Yorkshire to Penicruik in Midlothian. I have heard good and bad about the place and was just looking for some honest opinions on what it's like to live there etc before making a decision. X

Do you mean Penicuik? It’s a well-established town in Midlothian south of Edinburgh. I believe the schools are good. Like many places in the central belt of Scotland, there’s been substantial new building of houses in the area and I believe there are plans for a new primary school. The town centre itself seems rather depressing with several vacant shops and those that remain are bargain shops, bookmakers and so on. There is a large Tesco and good access to nearby shopping at Straiton and the Gyle.

Those who have been born or brought up there are often very loyal to the area and return there to bring up their families. However this can make it difficult for new people to make friends as the locals tend to bond over their childhoods/school memories in the area.

Road access to Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders is good. Although there are bus services, most people rely on cars. Being at a slightly higher altitude, winters can be very cold and it’s not uncommon for people to be snowed in for a few days.
