No advice I’m afraid but interested to hear about your experience because I need the same surgery for l4/5, s1.
I need a hip replacement first though so everything is taking years.

Oh no! How utterly frustrating and disappointing.

I have advanced degenerative disc disease, bone on bone arthritis and foraminal stenosis.

Been waiting years.

From time to time they send me a stupid questionnaire to complete and I feel like telling them to shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.

I had it 10 years ago. It was the best thing I’ve done. I was in hospital for 3 days but was able to walk completely unaided and walk up and down stairs before I left the hospital. My scar isn’t attractive but it’s a small price to pay. I still have back pain but that’s because my osteoarthritis is everywhere.

@Ahwig morning apparently my surgeon is having to change the way the OP is getting done to from the front

Yes mine was done from the front but one thing I forgot to mention was I had a catheter when I woke up as I had to stay in bed for 24 hours. I was also attached to a morphine drip so the pain was completely doable . But on the second day I had to be up and moving. My stomach looked huge though like 6 months pregnant apparently due to the air that had to be put in. It was mildly uncomfortable but went down within 2 days.

I've suffered with low back pain for about 10 years now (44) and its getting worse.

First few hours in the morning is the worst and I'm stretching and exercising every day.

What was the straw that broke the camels back for you? (excuse the pun).

Tillow4ever · 04/03/2026 10:32

I had a spinal fusion in 2015 but I can’t remember which letters/numbers. The surgery was considered a success, but it never resolved my chronic pain.

Good luck - I hope you have a different outcome

About 1.5 inches. I understand about the delays. Mine was all booked to go in the April but my consultant then left and the one who took over wanted to reassess everyone. This meant my surgery was put back by 4 months . in my case it was definitely worth it although I did do the exercises they told me to do I was mobile in a reasonable time. I met someone about 2 years after I had mine done who’d had the same thing but she hadn’t done anything to improve her fitness so it hadn’t given her the relief it had given me. You would have no choice but to get mobile asap to care for your grandchild so hopefully in your case it will be worth the short term out of action.
