What could this hip pain be?

My mum aged 86 is in a lot of pain with her right hip. She swears she hasn't fallen or banged it on anything. Doctors have arranged an xray for 6/12/24, quite a wait and she can barely move around. She's had blood tests which have come back fine (she had uterine cancer nine years ago and was worried it was that). She's allergic to ibuprofen so can only take paracetamol. She tried cocodamol but it didn't provide any more relief than paracetamol and she immediately became constipated which is a big risk for her. She's keeping a heat pack on it.

Any ideas? Anything that might help? It's a long wait until 6th December!

Arthritis?

I did wonder about that, she has arthritis in her fingers and neck, but I didn't think the pain would be so sharp and sudden, I thought it would build up gradually. I have an arthritic knee and it's gradually got worse over the years. Maybe it's different from person to person though?
