Is my back pain separate from hip OA or related?

I know that none of you can diagnose me, but I'm keen to hear from people who have experience of back pain with hip problems.

My dad's friend had back pain as the only symptom of hip arthritis, the back pain is gone after his hip replacement.

I've had hip OA for a few years, it's been manageable, but I've started to experience episodes of lower back pain. I'm miserable with it today, can only walk gently around house or lay on my side with a pillow between my knees.

If you've had or have a hip problem with lower back pain please tell me about your experience of it. If you had hip surgery did it cure your back pain? Have you had a diagnosis?

Hmmm think my thread title isn't very good, no responses!

Might start a new thread with a better one.

If you have oa in your hip, it'll change the way you walk and hold yourself posture wise, so yes, it can affect your back.

I have oa in my hip though told not bad enough for a replacement. But most of my pain is in my back & walking very difficult now. After another X-ray been told that I now have severe arthritis in my spine. Could you have some there, it’s often the case to have it in more than one place. Unfortunately they don’t replace spines.

I have hip and back pain so surgeon gave me a steroid shot in my hip to see if the problem was my hip or back. They also did CT and MRI scans of my leg and back.

It turns out that the back is worse than they thought - probably because I have been putting all my weight on one leg for years.

The surgeon told me it was usual to offer a steroid injection to see if the pain is from the hip - I have now had around 6 in the hip and they make the hip, knee and leg pain better but they are very short lived.

Not sure where you are up to on diagnosis and treatment but they may suggest something like this to work out if your pain is mainly hip or back.

A good physio may be help you with exercises to unlock your back

I have OA in both hips and get pain across the back of my pelvis, so kind of lower back, people tend to assume I have back trouble.

I have advanced OA in my hip which was misdiagnosed for years. I always thought my back pain was either related or just due to being a retired nurse who had to lift people back in the pre manual handling policies decades ago.
Turns out I have severe degenerative disc disease with practically no disc left L4 and 5.
If you are in pain insist on a scan for an accurate diagnosis. Don’t be fobbed off like I was.

I’ve heard stories quite similar to yours, many people with hip arthritis also struggle with back pain, and for some, surgery really did ease both. Everyone’s experience is different, but you’re definitely not alone in this. Hope you find some relief soon

I've had a hip replacement years ago. I had degenerative spine disease diagnosed 2 years ago and now have OA in the other hip. MSK team think they're connected. I've had a steroid injection in the hip and my back is less painful. I see a private physio for my back.
