Hi 👋
I like to know if there are good Private Hospitals in 🇬🇧 UK,
especially in Swansea/Cardiff, that do knee op,

(Anybody, who has had satisfactory successful knee op, quite recently or in the past up to several years ago)?

Is there such thing as a Private Hospitals affordable payment plan scheme,?

so I could pay for this on a monthly direct debits payments over, a course of a few years /several years,

I have been suffering with Rumertoid Athritis since 2019, had to give up my job in a very well known budget hotel in 🇬🇧 uk,

Recently been diagnosed with Oestro Athritis too,
I have had a knee steriod 💉 injection, which has helped a bit, not as much as I was obviously hoping it would,

Been looking around to see if I could do a bit of volunteering work, to give myself a cofindence boost and have more structure to my week too,

But obviously with health issues holds me back,
I often do creative Arts 🎨 stuff /chair yoga/meditation as much as possible,
Love this ,highly recommended, as a form of stress relief Escapism from too much of Reality of life,
(wish I had known how good Arts 🎨 stuff is a long time ago.

what knee op? replacement? full ? partial? arthroscopy?
YOu need to see a consultant orthopedist first and have an MRI scan and then yes, most private hospitals have credit arrangements.

Private hospitals are pretty similar, it’s a good orthopaedic surgeon you need to find, one who specialises in knee ops. To be fair, they don’t vary that much. They all work in NHS hospitals and are highly skilled. They do private lists for extra income. Safety wise, you are always better off in an NHS hospital, as if anything goes wrong and you need urgent care, a private hospital would just ship you out into the NHS.

I don’t know about payment plans but try calling a private hospital near you and ask.

How old are you OP? Replacement knees are a big operation and extremely painful recovery and not generally suggested if you are under 60.

i wouldnt dream of having one done abroad as you can hardly walk for a couple of weeks and bending and straightening the knee takes a few weeks so you wouldn't want to be coming back from anywhere on a plane soon.

you would need at least 6 weeks off work and sometimes longer.

I am nearly 50 years age,

I heard on the grapevine about sometimes people have all sorts of Operations abroad,

as they are somewhat cheaper/ plus lovely bit of hol break inc to recover ect,

I am not sure,
But I think it probably be a full knee op @QOD

As a PP said, bear in mind that a private hospital will just send you to NHS A&E if something goes wrong. I was in A&E recently and was in the bed next to a lady who’d had exactly that experience. You mention Cardiff and NHS hospitals here in Wales are under enormous pressure so I would choose carefully in terms of where you could end up.

Op, I’ve recently had a knee replacement done abroad but only because I live in the Middle East. I wasn’t a medical tourist.

Everyone reacts differently to the surgery and I’m considered to be recovering extremely well but 9 weeks on from surgery I’d not be able to get on an aircraft. Recovery is really hard going and a week in I was just out of hospital and using the commode in my bedroom to have a wee in. If not I’d have peed all over my carpet hobbling to the loo because walking was that difficult. In fact I used it for 5 weeks.

And there’s also the potential problems with blood clots. I was on warfarin for a month following my surgery and I wouldn’t have gotten on a plane for all the tea in china.

Nine weeks on I’m only beginning to start feeling human again. And believe me this surgery doesn’t just affect your knee. It affects the whole blooming lot of you from head to foot and it’s fair to say I’ve felt like death warmed up.

You'll get the same surgeon in a private hospital as you would in the NHS only a lot quicker that's all and a nicer recovery room

I had a total knee replacement at 52. Wouldn’t go abroad. It is about £15k in the uk tho
nhs wait list varies from 4 moths to 2 years

If you've only just been diagnosed with knee OA, then I'd try other things before going for knee replacement - DH who has really terrible OA and was first offered a replacement at age 40 has managed to keep his going a few years longer with hydroluronic acid injections into the joint which have been absolutely amazing.
Replacement is all about your physio care pre and post surgery, so I think going abroad would be a very bad idea indeed

@CMOTDibbler , I’m Sorry for interrupting - I’d been having the hyaluronic injections for a few years and was really happy with the results. Unfortunately though when I had the last set I was unable to walk within a few hours of the injection into my left knee. The right one was ok. Ten weeks later I was still so debilitated and in so much pain I had to have a total knee replacement. No one knows what happened to me but such was the situation that I’ll never have another injection and whereas I thought my knee replacements were another couple of years away I’ll be having my second one done in about 6 months.

I was stage 3 bone on bone in both knees and I would really like to know what happened to me.

This. My dd had a acl repair and meniscus repair done on the NHS by the same surgeon that I had used privately 10 years earlier.

@PollyThePixie DHs surgeon said that he hadn't had any bad outcomes from doing the HA, but did warn him before the first one that his knee was so angry with everything that messing with it could cause a pain flare. But at the time it was the only option as his knee is a complete mess (bone through bone, bone spurs everywhere, and the remains of the cartilage pad round the edge ripped off and is floating and flips) but during lockdown 1 the private hospital couldn't operate on him due to complications so it was the only option. He's having his last injection this week before scheduling a TKR in August on 'bad' knee but needs his other knee, at least one hip, and probably ankle surgery as well
