Chronic pain

Extra dose of co codamol?

Cait73 · 10/01/2022 22:37

I've had a nasty viral infection for 10 days the worst effect is my throat it's so inflamed I can barely swallow - I'm taking co codamol every 4-6 hours and am aware maximum dose is 8 tablets within a 48 hour period

BUT today has been particularly awful I've been up since 3am and I've literally counted the minutes to the next dose of painkillers

By 10pm I've had 4 doses stretched out from 3am, I'm now really worried how I'm going to get through the night if I can't take another dose ('till 5am when I took my first dose) would it be really awful to have an extra dose as a one off??

You can’t because of the paracetamol. Have you got ibuprofen or naproxen? These can be taken alongside cocodamol.

You shouldn’t take more than the max dose, it’s more to do with the paracetamol in it than the codeine really. What dose is it you’re taking? You can get 30/500 prescribed if you need it - if that’s not what you’re taking already. I think you can also take ibuprofen with it as well. But please check that, I may be wrong. Find a 24 hour pharmacy that’s open near you and give them a ring now and ask.

Have you seen a doctor?

You can take ibuprofen (if not contraindicated) but no more than 8 Co-codamol in a day due to risk of liver damage

I can't take ibuprofen because I'm on lithium

I saw a gp last Tuesday (virus diagnosis advised to take extra fluids and regular pain medication) Wednesday (prescribed throat and nasal sprays that have done nothing) and today (antibiotics prescribed)

Or try Nurofen plus? (With codeine).
My dentist recommended it for tooth pain.
Aslo, next time your paracetamol dose is due you could try gargling with the soluble paracetamol tablets.

It won't make it better, the only thing I've ever tried that gets rid is that disgusting anaesthetic throat spray. You can get it over the counter.
My sympathies.

@Shehasadiamondinthesky tried that for a week then prescribed another one for the past week, might as well be spraying water down my throat!

No cocodamol won't make it better but it makes the pain a tiny bit more bearable and I don't feel like I'm choking

You can't unfortunately at Ely. It's due to the effects the paracetamol has on your liver.

If you can get out tomorrow or get someone else to go out for you go to a chemist and ask for tyrozets. I had literally the worst bout of tonsillitis s couple of years about and these were the only thing that game me some relief. The

Is the pain relief actually working though? I find cocodomal builds up so it may not be strong enough if you’ve taken 8 today and still in pain.

What dose is the codeine? 8/15/30?

@SpookyScarySkeletons they’ve discontinued Tyrozets! I was after them when I had covid and the WORST sore throat and the pharmacist said they no longer make them.

OP, Difflam spray is quite good.

@Youngatheart00 they're the maximum dose and yes 100% working, not taking the pain away completely but within 30/40 mins of taking them I've peeled myself off the ceiling

Can you get that spray to numb your throat? If not when I used to get tonsillitis I used to sick ice cubes or drink slush drinks.

Can you take aspirin? If so, get some dispersible tablets and gargle with those.

Speak to your doctor and ask for stronger pain relief if you need it. They could prescribe codeine or oromorph or something surely?
