Icing a madeira cake for xmas

I have made a madeira cake for the kids for christmas instead of the usual fruit cake. I am going to decorate it with ready to roll icing. It needs to hang around for about a week. What do I put between the icing and the cake? I am assuming that butter cream will go off too quickly. Thanks

madeira cake needs to be eaten within 5-10 days of baking.

You can freeze it if needed.

I normally put buttercream between the layers and then glaze with apricot jam before putting on the ready to roll icing.

I recently made a cake like this a wwek too soon (mix up on dates for a retirement do) and I froze the entire thing for a week, iced. It was fine and tasted great.

Also if you are going make a madeira and not eat it straight away you can brush it with quite a lot of stock syrup to retain the moisture in the sponge.
