They do look fantastic! Definitely going to do those. Where do you get the 'mini balls' though - and the bigger red candy balls for the noses?

sowhatis · 20/12/2009 09:24

lookes like mini smarties and normal smarties to me.

OllieWollieWoo · 20/12/2009 09:27

I'd have thought normal and mini smarties would do? Or red skittles? Suppose you could colour icing or marzipan if you wanted an actual round ball? I'm admiring how each cake looks the same - do you reckon they have sliced the tops of the cakes to get them so flat - my cupcakes always turn out with little peaks on them!

I too have 'peaky' cupcakes at times, yes a little judicial trimming, smoothed over by buttercream will do the trick. Smarties and Skittles sound good to me with the added bonus that the Head Cook (me) gets to eat the orange Smarties

sowhatis · 20/12/2009 09:34

looks like they have put alot of choc icing on to even it out!

OllieWollieWoo · 20/12/2009 09:35

You should have seen the eye rolling DH has just given me re discussing peaky cupcakes at this time on a Sunday morning! Sigh - some people just don't get MN do they???!!!!

I always slice the tops off my cup cakes to make a flat base for icing.

I will definitley make those reindeer cupcakes next year, they do look v cute and v easy, but I've already made two dozen of the NIgella hollyand berries cupcakes, so that will do this year.

I always do cupcakes instead of mince pies as no one likesmince pies here.

Scootergrrrl · 20/12/2009 09:47

Glace cherries work very well as noses instead of candy balls and you can use chocolate chips for eyes.

ZacharyQuack · 20/12/2009 10:46

No way! I made 50 reindeer cupcakes for DD2's kindy on Thursday - 2 days before this recipe was published! I thought it was my own original idea.

funkyanna37 · 20/12/2009 10:58

these are very cool - off to get some ingredients methinks!!!!

OllieWollieWoo · 20/12/2009 12:14

What did you use for the antlers ZacharyQuack? Very impressed at knocking out 50!

mumto2andnomore · 20/12/2009 13:36

Ive seen similar ones with bits of curly wurly for antlers too

Morosky · 20/12/2009 13:52

Curly wurlies would be better IMO.

I might do some of these with dd

DaftApeth · 20/12/2009 14:00

Ooh, now Sycamoretree made some lovely reindeer cupcakes last year.

She used white icing as the background though. They were fab.

All her cupcakes are yum, in fact.

We have already got too many Christmas treats recipes lined up, but I just printed this and added it to my Christmas recipe folder (ahem, really proud of being organised enough to have one, this is nor normal for me).

Thanks!

ja9 · 20/12/2009 14:15

Brilliant! Will def print and add to favourites!

ZacharyQuack · 20/12/2009 22:47

I used broken pretzels for antlers, though I couldn't get them to look as good as that photo.

I'm in NZ and used Jaffas (red candy coated choc balls, probably the same thing that Donna Hay (who is Australian) used for hers) for the nose.

I baked and froze cupcakes all week and the we had an assembly line to ice and decorate them on Thursday.
