Mothers of girls - help me! I am sat here with a streaming cold in front of Amazon and I am CLUELESS

I don't know what the hell to bloody buy them

and I have the worst cold of my entire life. Maybe it's swine flu? I don't know.

dd1 (9) has a new headboard for her bed with a clicky light, but I need something else to play with, surely?

dd2 is 5 in Jan and I am seriously thinking of entering the realm of Sylvanian families. She has outgrown her preschool toys but doesn't know what to replace them with. She wants 'ponies' she says. What kind of ponies?

don't ask me what they like, because I don't know. At present they like arguing about who has the television remote, arguing about whose toys are whose, and moaning because they can only open one chocolate advent calendar window a day.

Please help a poor snivelling woman.

So far I have bought them one HSM doll each from Home Bargains.

My 8yo is mad for Sylvanian families and is getting more additions to her collection this year. There were some items on offer a few weeks back in Argos - the canal boat was half price, may be sold out now. I have had a few good deals also from Amazon. The Toy Shop online (aka The Entertainer) has a Sylvanian house on offer and if you use the code OOTD5 - you get an extra 5%off).

Other than that my 8yo is getting Bendaroos, Project Runway Fashion Designer type stuff. SHe has expressed an interest in Littlest Pet shop - which I have ignored as I dont like!

My 11yo is onto Lego and has been since age 7 or 8. She has the Creator Houses and spends ages rebuilding them.

Ponies - My eldest used to like Chestnut ridge - available at Toys R Us. Breyer is very similar for play ponies and horses but more expensive (but slightly nicer).

There is also I love/Luv Ponies - a bit like Animal Hospital stuff as well as My Little Pony. My Little Pony is deffo geared towards younger children IMO.

Hope this helps!

Portofino · 16/12/2009 11:52

Playmobil warning! DD had the hospital last Xmas. It took 2 of us FOUR hours to put together. DD promptly took all the bits out and put them in a shoebox. It started to fall apart again after a reasonably short space of time. Never, ever again.

belgo · 16/12/2009 12:03

I refuse to believe that there is ANYTHING bad about playmobil

handbagqueen · 16/12/2009 12:11

Apologies fro the links but I don't know how to do links properly!!

Ponies - both my DD's (2 and 7) love pony in my pocket.
You can get it from amazon, but its cheaper in Argos.

Also Benderoos and Sticker Scrathers are a big hit with my DD's and their cousin (10).

How about CDs - I have bought 'Barbie loves to Party' and 'bop it rock it'

Or a Karaoke machine for a bigger gift?

Bucharest · 16/12/2009 12:34

Portofino- T'is basphemy to be sure, this critique of the toy that gets dp from under my feet for hours on Christmas Day afternoon...he stays on the dining room table with his instructions, me and Mum and dd sit on the sofa nomming Thorntons and watching crap. T'is heaven!

4 hours you say.......

Marne · 16/12/2009 12:34

Dd1 (5) wants playmobil and lego, i have got her the playmobil farm set and some sylvanian bits (in hope they can be used together), she also likes:

knex
whammy(or wammy?)
puppy in my pocket
littlest pet shop
Hot wheels (a bit of a tom boy).

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 16/12/2009 16:52

Have to say Littlest Pet Shop may seem expensive for size of what it is but in terms of value for money/how much its played with its been my best buy for DD.

One of the big houses for all the Pets is on offer in Toys R Us at the minute.

notwavingjustironing · 16/12/2009 16:59

what about some fairy lights for her bedroom ? You can get some really pretty ones - they could go over/round her headboard ?

I could never get enough books as a child - what about getting some Famous Five or something similar?

nappyzonecantrunfortoffee · 16/12/2009 17:06

what about that pony in your pocket stuff - my dd has all the puppy in her pocket paraphanalia - seen it on offer im sure in argos.... they do other variations - jungle in my pocket etc....

dunno about older one - a wii to share?

EVye · 16/12/2009 17:26

My DDs like the "I love ponies" range and it isnt too expensive.

Or what about polly pocket?

Not sure about the 9 year old - books?

EVye · 16/12/2009 17:27

here

Portofino · 16/12/2009 21:11

Actually dd especially loved the Polly Pocket shopping centre that nanny bought. We already did big pressies for st nicolas. Personally i though twas a complete waste of money.

We bought the Barbie van at 68 euros . This already seems to be getting some use.

Purplebuns · 16/12/2009 21:20

I still have some of my Sylvanians.. They are a great buy as they really hold their value.

They are also good quality and still look goodish after 15 years of abuse! (my little sisters have had them for awhile now!)

I would definitely investigate them if I were you.

christiana - see my warning above!

poinsettydawg · 16/12/2009 21:23

dd2 loved polly pocket stuff and animal hospital. In fact, she still hasn't really grown out of it (11). Fun to play with.

KeithTalent · 16/12/2009 21:25

Construction was stressful! Wine was involved! And yes, bit have dropped off. I would recommend supergluing everything in place.

WillieWalsh · 16/12/2009 22:11

did anyone correct the "sat" grammar?

cece · 16/12/2009 22:14

MY DD (8) likes

Sylvannian Families
My Little Pony
Littlest Pet Shop

All played with regularly and get mixed up together for adventures.

TheCappster · 17/12/2009 20:34

okay to update you all since you have all been so kind

we have for dd2 a ponyville playset with popcorn or something weird that dh got in TK Maxx (bargain)

a Sylvanian family on a beach

and one of those groovy girls dolls BECAUSE I LIKE THEM

so we are doing well

thinking about the cheapest mp3 player in the world, like was suggested, to load up her Hannah Montana/ HSM tunes onto so we don't have to listen to them
