What to get for 9yo niece?

Want to spend about £15.

Have bought younger nieces books and nephew Lego digger thing, so something comparable to that.

I've no idea what books she reads. She is a voracious reader, but I've no idea what she has already read or what she likes these days (last year it was Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Chalet School, etc) but I guess she's moved on.

Got book token for her birthday, so need something different this time (also think token looks odd if her siblings get gifts).

Not into pink, sparkly, girly stuff. No idea on clothes sizes (think I've got that wrong in the past). Not particularly keen on arty stuff.

Well the Jaqueline Wilson books are always very popular with the girls

But could you ask her parents for a pointer?

I'm pretty sure she's read all those.

SIL is hopeless - standard reply is that she can't think what to get herself, let alone come up with ideas for others.

I know you said she's not into sparkly girlie stuff but how about a nice silver necklace or bracelet. You can get some lovely ones for about £15 and they are girlie without being spangly!

What about music? I saw Tesco had some little pink mp3 players for £10 when I was doing my shopping this morning so that might be nice along with some nice smellies or something so she feels all grown up.

Apologies if they are totally useless suggestions-Ive got a 4 year old DS so not that good at girlie pressies!!

I always get my 9 yr old niece clothes. My sis approves as left to her own devices niece has a tendency to want 'slutty' stuff. She wears what I get her!

What about nice PJs or a dressing gown?

What about a game? My 9yo and 8yo dds love board and card games. They hate girly sparkly pink stuff too (and would not go for smellies or jewellery or clothes)

Boggle (£12 on Amazon) is a current favourite. My 8yo wants a little travel chess set, would your niece like a variation on that? (The little sets of various magnetic games).

River crossing and Traffic Jam are also popular games with my dds. in fact any board game really.

What about something sciency if she doesn't like arty stuff? Something like an Alien matter maker, (again, £10 on amazon I think). my 9yo is getting one of those.

Get a couple of dvds - Hannah Montana/ Drake and Josh/ Harry Potter etc or the Poppet Rocket CD is popular?

How about a posh grown up wash bag, flannel and fruity smellies from the body shop or boots - shower gel, foam bath, soap & lip balm?

PeedOffWithNits · 11/12/2009 18:18

Or a stationery set, with pretty notelets and paper? Posh pen with her name on it?

Do you live nearby - could it be a treat like going to the cinema with you?

Bath bomb kit or perfume lab kit - both around £10 from Amazon?

My 11yr old niece loves to read and write so I have got her this and a posh Waterman pen.
