2 year old 'construction' type toy recommendations

DS is 2.2 and really into his megabloks/puzzles/putting together his train track.

However, it feels a bit like his megabloks he's getting a little bit old for and I'd quite like to get something he can build and make.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

I've seen Kids K-Nex toys online and wondered how popular they've been?

Thanks

Both dd's liked Kids K-nex, they got played with every day, dd1 is now on to the smaller K-nex.

Marne - thanks for posting, is 2 too young, do you think?

We liked K'Nex too but have to say duplo's amazing! We got huge collection from ebay and it's still played with a lot (ds is now 6). Easy to get wee extra bits too (figures, animals and vehicles most played with).

Duplo looks good too, oh no decision time!

Dd2 played with k-nex when she was around 2.4, its easy to put together (harder to take apart). Duplo is great too also stickle bricks.

Kids knex or Duplo definitely. They are quite different - I think for very small children Kids Knex may be slightly better as then can build models with very little help very quickly, less likely to be tears because it has broken as they are building it, etc. Or if you already have Megablocks you could get the smaller megablocks which are compatible with Lego (and cheaper!)

If your budget will stretch to it you could get a small box of each and then add to it at his next birthday.

Definitely duplo. Classic toy, available in a wide range of colours/themes and v durable/unflimsy. It'll give him hours of fun if he likes that sort of thing and last until he graduates onto lego proper in a couple of years and wants to hand it on to another child.

When DS2 was that age he loved this...it's like giant chunky meccanno. When he first got it, he just enjoyed screwing bits together, he still plays with it now at 5, and can actually build 'things', but definitely suitable for a 2 yr old who likes this kind of thing.

sheeplikessleep · 06/12/2009 17:06

that looks great too garcia.
i'm indecisive at the best of times, wish i had the money (and space!) for all 3, but we'll decide on one.

thanks everyone for posting.

my ds, 3 has just been given box of knex and loves it. It is proper knex, not the kiddi one and he can make things quite easily by himself , it will also last as when he is older, you can add motors etc.Duplo is good but he will grow out of it by around age 4.Lego great but you will have to help him with it for a couple of years.
