We usually aim for around the 21st. We've a small house and this year we've a kitten (sobs at vision of putting it back together every morning)

Now DD at school, it will probably be the weekend after school ends so not too much earilier.

My Mum used to put ours up Christmas Eve after I'd gone to bed,she said so it seemed more special CHristmas Day, but I suspect it's because she also couldn't face it until then!

bigchris · 05/12/2009 21:23

i thought the twelve days of xmas ended on sixth january
maybe i am wrong and sch mum was right

sanfairyann · 05/12/2009 21:26

we did ours 1st advent sunday - so in nov
but in concession to dh who is bah humbug, we're doing it in stages this year, tree tmrw . . .

mistletoekisses · 06/12/2009 07:44

Ours went up yesterday. And look fantastic. Definitely not too early IMO, and reckon we will be taking them down New years day.

I am a lone voice but think you should let the kids/ DH start putting them up. Ohhh go on, you know you want to! The garden center where we got our tree from yesterday was the busiest I have ever seen it, so I do think heaps of people are putting trees up this weekend.

izzybiz · 06/12/2009 08:00

I wanted to wait till the weekend before (18th/19th) but Dd is begging to have them put up! May have to do it next weekend, we have a real tree and I dont want it to be like a crisp come new year!

(We also have a one year old, and I'm dreading the tree carnage!)

Georgimama · 06/12/2009 08:03

Too early for me - I will be sick of vacuuming up pine needles by the 20th if I did them now. Ours is going up 18/19th when DH will have finished work and I only have 3 days at work the following week which consist of Monday night - work Christmas party Tuesday - department lunch - unlikely to finish before 3pm - Wednesday - doing as little as possible.

Buda · 06/12/2009 08:29

We were not going to bother at all this year as we are going away from 18th Dec to 10th Jan but I don't feel Xmassy for some reason so i bought a small black tree in Tesco yesterday. Saw black trees a few years ago in Selfridges and thought they looked quite funky so when I saw these yesterday for about 8 quid I couldn't resist! I am normally a very traditional girl when it comes to my tree. Bought some turquoise and silver decs too. We have a 7 month old puppy so a 3 foot tree on a table seems sensible.

DH raised his eyebrows when I told him.

We will put it up today as we go in less than 2 weeks so I want to get the most out of it.

Cleaner can take it down when we go away!

hatwoman · 06/12/2009 14:42

I normally wait til teh weekend before...but we're having a party on the 18th so I guess we'll have to have them done before that. the weekend of the 12th seems too early to me. this weekend is way too early

skymoo · 06/12/2009 14:47

our won't be up until we have finished decorating...not looking too hopeful for next weekend!

chickbean · 06/12/2009 14:57

Was wondering what to do, as we have the builders in doing a loft conversion until the 23rd - think I'm going to crack this afternoon and buy a tree. The needles aren't going to be worse than all the dirt and dust.

big chris - will she take them down on the 18th then (after the 12 days of Christmas)?

IdrisTheDragon · 06/12/2009 15:00

Ours is usually next weekend - did do it earlier last year but that was because we went away from 18th December until nearly new year. Dh and children considered this weekend but I have been working today abd was working yesterday and so I said No .

CremeDeMenthe · 06/12/2009 15:03

I've just put up some lights outside (white) and the front door wreath. Will get tree later this week. It does seem early this year - we have a carol service this afternoon, carol singing tomorrow night, the school nativity is this week, so the DC are getting in the xmas spirit. It seems a bit mean to hold out until the weekend before xmas.

Hassled · 06/12/2009 15:05

I can't possibly put anything up until I have cleared the pile of shite toys from the only available corner of the sitting room. And as there is nowhere else I can put the toys, we might be waiting a while.

doggiesayswoof · 06/12/2009 15:07

Nah, it's not too early! We don't put up that much stuff, but our window lights went up on Thursday and the tree is going up tonight. I usually do it over a week or so, never seem to have enough time to put everything up all at once.

DS and the puppy will no doubt dismantle the tree repeatedly and we'll get sick of putting it back together again but DD is desperate to get everything up. Once the advent calendar is on the go, Christmas has arrived, as far as DD is concerned.

doggiesayswoof · 06/12/2009 15:09

Hassled, my pile of shite stuff has been moved to a really inconvenient spot in our bedroom to make room for the tree in the living room. It's annoying me already.

Fruitysunshine · 06/12/2009 15:35

Ours goes up tonight! We usually like to spend a day of it putting up the decorations and the lights outside on the house. However DH is on nightshift this weekend so I am doing the tree tonight and then he will put up the outside lights on Tuesday. The kids love all the festivities!

This year we are late - although I have to say I think it is a better time to do it compared to how I have done it in the past.

Christmas Eve DH and the kids are going to buy a real tree for the patio and spend some time decorating it. That gives me time inside to prepare some food and goodies!

LadyGlenChristmasPresent · 06/12/2009 15:36

Ours aren't going up until the 18th. They will just have to wait.

LadyGlenChristmasPresent · 06/12/2009 15:39

LOL at 12 days of Chritmas starting 12 days before Christmas. Don't they teach them anything these days.

midnightexpress · 06/12/2009 15:46

I have a dilemma - I would normally wait ntil the weekend before Xmas, but we're going away then until after Christams, so will probably do it next weekend instead so that we at least get a week.

Got some cute Scandinavian deccos in Ikea - straw hearts, little elves. Feel like Martha bleedin Stewart.

WilfSell · 06/12/2009 15:49

Crikey. My kids are lucky if they get anything before Christmas Eve. We let them buy one new tree thingy each from the Christmas market and put the tree decorations on while listening to Carols from King's and eat mince pies. And then I sling some cards on ribbons and chuck a bit of holly about.

I hate fuss.

midnightexpress · 06/12/2009 15:53

you are a woman after my own heart wilfsell. I bought an advent calendar yesterday.

WilfSell · 06/12/2009 15:56

hahahah, me too. Except we haven't got them yet. Kids keep saying 'so that's 6 chocolates in one go then?'

I might watch Kirsty's Homemade Christmas next week though, in the hope of being tight with homemade presentsgrowing a Martha Stewart gene. Unlikely, I imagine.

midnightexpress · 06/12/2009 21:39

Ha. Some hope that Kirsty's homemade Christmas will be in any way cheap. She'll be off learning how to hand-blow her own Murano glass baubles or I'm a monkey's uncle.
