What bike for 3 year old ds?

Really want to buy him a bike and had my eye on a balance bike but a friend said NO get a proper bike he will only use it for a short time, I must say he is better on a bike than his 5 year old sister which makes me think go for a proper bike? If so, any makes/websites that you can suggest? Thanks ladies

My parents are getting ds2 a balance bike from halfords www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_73 3203langId-1categoryId205254 as I think they are better than using bikes with stabilisers and lead to them being able to 'go it alone' on 2 wheels sooner.

Judging from the kids in our family, the ones who had stabilisers took a lot longer to get confident on 2 wheels, than the ones who had balance bikes.
