twilight books - okay for an 11 year old?

my dh's little sister age 11 (12 in january) has asked for twilight books for xmas. I thought fine, then did a google only to find they have been banned from some schools. Also when I did a search on Amazon, the synopsis suggests they have an adult relationship theme.

Would I be in trouble for buying them for her do you think? I was reading a lot of Judy Blume stuff forever etc by about year 8 or 9 and my mum went mental! I realise they grow up quicker now.

Just a quick poll wanted really, if your dd was 11 would you be happy for her to read twilight? I haent read them btw so maybe I am overeating to the synopsis.

They are written by Steph Meyer who is a Mormon so sexual overtones are not an issue per se

I was really just concerned I would cop it from the inlaws if I bought them ha ha. I read somewhere that the third book is about teenage pregnancy.

But sounds like they would be fine then.

I'm out of touch as to what is/isn't suitable for a 12 year old but can certainly let you know that Twilight is full of pent up teenage hormonal emotion (I love it!) and some snogging. By the 4th book there is (vampire) sex and yes, pregnancy. None of it is explicit but you probably want parental buy-in at least.

In Judy Blume terms it's not Forever, but it's probably nearer that than any of the others I can remember

there is a graphic childbirth/ceaserian by vampire scene in book 4

erm okaaaaaay maybe not book 4 then LOL, books 1-3 are £1- on amazon free postage so if PIL are happy i will get them. Sounds like it only gets more grown up by book 4.

I've let dd read them - she's 10.

Absolutely loves them. Book 4 is the only one to be concerned about, although I felt it was ok. Not as explicit as it could have been.

Although now Piffle has made me realise why. .

Buy 1 - 3 and let the parents decide on the last one.

If you google "midnight sun" you can assess for yourself before you buy. Its the last book which is book 1 written from Edward's perspective (he's the vampire main character). It got leaked onto the internet before it was finished.
