Starting a kid on video games

I don't know who is more hopeless, me or my husband, at all things techie, but I am thinking of getting the kids (4yo DS and 2yo DD) some sort of "starter" video game set and I don't even know where to start. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the best kind is to start on, but that can be added to later as they get older? I was at PC World yesterday and have no idea what the relative merits are of the Xbox vs the Wii vs the Playstation (am I leaving anything out??) and could use some advice.

Thanks!!

We have a Wii and my 4-year-old dd1 loves it. She can play quite a few of the games (we have Wii SPort, Wii Resort and also the skii-ing/snow-boarding one)and because she plays against herself she doesn't always get angry about losing.... My 2 yr old dd2 enjoys watching and occasionally "joining in" by holding the control and throwing it about a bit. You can also make "Mii's" of you and all your friends, which the girls think is hilarious and always a good ice-breaker when we have friends over.
